Russian authorities have sought to make examples of violators. The 2007 conviction of a high-school teacher who was found guilty of using bootleg Microsoft software in classroom machines garnered huge coverage in the state-controlled media. Alexander Ponosov from a Urals Mountains school was fined $190.

Default Pirated software still in shops

Above is the article headline, which I am afraid is misleading.

Had it said "Pirated software still in Russian shops", it would have thrown this into a completely different light.

And I would probably not have read this

What a joke. Schools, by default, should install linux - solve all these MS piracy problems.

what this article failed to mention, is that the teacher was eventually found not guilty, as he was supplied with the pre-installed PCs by the state company.

Anyway, fsck these capitalist swine - microsoft, why should russians pay for such a ****ty software? microsoft should be happy and grateful that russians use their windows and office for free.
They threatening Russia with accession into World trade Organization - whahaha, russians dont need WTO virus in their country.

MS has been tightening the screws here... you can no longer buy a DSP version without a fully built computer (according to MS dictate), and the prices for Windows 7 are more expensive than what XP ever used to be. All of that is going to result in more piracy.

The only way to fight piracy is to make your product cheap and widely available.

Didn't microsoft drop it's pricing drastically at one point in china? How did they work?

Also microsoft should expect high piracy ins countries like russia, china etc. Nobody has the money to pay for their goods. Also it is not like microsoft is not making billions and billions in profit so what is the big deal? They should be happy people are pirating windows and not using linux, keeps them as the market leader which means more sales.

I don't know how many computers there were, but I would pirate for +- R1400...
The theoretical capacity of a Boeing 747 filled with Blu-ray Discs is 595,520,000 Gigabytes, resulting in a 245,829 Gbit/s flight from New York to Los Angeles.

Knowing Russian salaries, they guy probably gets half of that.

His surname is pretty funny, BTW. Ponos in russian means diarrhea. So translated his surname is basically Diarrheaov

But nook-and-cranny peddlers remain popular and trade openly, suppressing market prices for their legitimate competitors.
Suppressing market prices. That is a good one!
