I've just purchased the ATI HD5770 for around R1600. Seems like a pretty good card for the price.

ATi 5770 or 4890

Depending on your need for DX11 (5770)

The 5770 is as good as a 4870 in performance, so the 4890 will be faster, but also run hotter and use much more power.
I'd think your best option would be to get a 1GB 5770.

HD4890 is the best bet at that price range imo. 5770 isn't close to it in performance, sorry Frag.

Hmmm... I was just thinking a 1gb 9800gt ^^

EDIT:

Actually.
I remember hunting a while back and I thought that the ATI Sapphire HD4850/4870 Toxic Edition would be great.

Id say an NVIDIA GTS250 variant from Rectron. R1500 -R1800

Wait a couple weeks dude, see if nvidia actually launch on time. Might find the card 5850 drops to around 2.3-2.4k mark

lol killa you're always banging on about Fermi hehehe.

Hereby Cerebus Predicts The Following:

Fermi will suck. ATI will change nothing.

All fair with the the new cards from nvidia and the possibility that ATI will drop their prices on Nvidia's new card release
but if you want a Nvidia card now and can't wait get the GTX260 896mb card.Way better than GTS250 and if you shop around you will get it @ 2K.

LOL only because i know when nvidia or ati release cards pricing drops. It is not long now :D (if they release on time though).

:D

I will say this - if you're gaming at 1920 you'll struggle to max out everything with 5770. 4890/260/275 you'll get comfortable framerates no matter what you play. I'm speaking from personal experience.

5770 if you want/need DirectX 11 or intend to keep the card for a while. It is also a very energy efficient card.

4890 if you need more performance and are willing to endure a higher power bill, and you intend to upgrade in a year or so.

GTX 260 if you're a nVidia fanboy. :p

Well depends what you play single or multiplayer.

I mean battlefield bad company 2 for instance runs like a dream on high AA AF etc but go online and it is a nightmare for even a 5850 to keep up with. So single player games i can agree a 4890/260/275 will max out games but not online. Online 40 FPS is horrid. Feels like bad lag :D

I game at 1920 and max out everything except Crysis. And my CPU isnt even amazing (athlon 620). Its a Club 3D overclocked edition that cost me about R1800. They had no regular editions in stock otherwise I would have bought one of those, since I realize overclocking it myself is very easy.

@cerebus
Frag kinda didnt say the 5770 is the equal of the 4890, sorry cerebus.
