Hey guys
Yes, it's another one of "those" threads!
I have some varsity bursaries paying out , and since all my class fees for the year is already payed from other bursaries, I thought--> Why not take R10k and see if I can put together a nice i7 pc?

Well, my current specs are in my sig. Gonna retain the screen, HDD's (may be looking into getting a SSD, but that's not essential) and I have speakers, keyboard, mice ect. ect.
So I browsed around and it seems quite difficult to build a solid i7 pc for R10k...
I'm going to need a new mobo (+/- R1600)
i7 CPU (+/- R2400 ? )
3x2GB DDR3 1600 GOOD quality RAM (+/- R2000?_
PSU (maybe 650watts?) (+/- R700 ? )
New case ( +/- R1200?)
New GPU (ATI 5-series , +/- R3500-ish?)

This upgrade will most probably happen in June/July.

Any advice and recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks guys,
Regards

You can get a decent 5-Series card for like R2500 odd and a very decent case for R800 odd, so there's already a saving of R1400 odd ..... 3x Corsair 2gb DDR3-1333 1.6v CL9 instead, for R1800 odd, bit more money saved. Only thing is, are the i7's really that cheap? I thought they were more in the R3000 range.

Core I-7 2.8Ghz 930 LGA 1366(1600FSB 8MB) R 2,359 excl. R 2,689 incl @ PCINT --> It's not the "best" i7 though, but it's an i7 :)
Thanks for the input!

I suppose you could do it but i'm not sure it would be the best way to use your money if you want a gaming PC out of it. Better saving that money by going AMD or i5, and spend the bit you saved on a better graphics card and bigger monitor. Don't forget you're going to want to upgrade your screen hey... 22" you might as well have a 260 - anything more is pointless atm. 965be would be practically the same in gaming scenarios and you'd save a tidy packet.

Yes it's possible, see my sig (minus the screen and a cheaper PSU)

Why don't you just get the amd 965, then you can get a power house vga card. Does your mobo support the 965?

I don't think it does, but I want to get a new "better" mobo anyway, the one I have now just meets the requirements , but I want something more "powerful". Getting the 965 for around R2500 (http://www.computersonly.co.za/productlist.aspx?categoryid=36086) v.s. getting the i7 930 for about the same price? Is it going to boil down to personal preference then? Cause for the last 10 years I only bought AMD, but lately it seems that i7 > AMD ? Don't want a fanboi debate, just stating it.
Anyhow, thanks, will keep it in mind!

Dude i am not fan boy, far from it actually that is reserved for qwiksilver :D but for gaming there is no difference between amd and intel, so i would rather pay 2.5k for a 965 amd than blow 4-5k on mobo ram and cpu that will not be much better in gaming.

You would be better off getting a 965 and 5970 :D

I found i7 is to be a total let down, not nearly as fast as i thought it would be.

A recent article on TomsHardware.co.uk showed there was no noticeable difference in gaming performance between an i3 and an i7 (no more than 2 or 3 fps, and in many games at some resolutions the i3 even came out on top).

Your best bet I think would be to get one of the upper-end i5 chips, they really are just as good and will cost you a lot less. Rather spend your cash on gfx.
