I would suggest that you buy a pre-assembled PC.

Just do lots of research. Thats what Google and forums are for. Though you may have noticed the latter can be a little sarcastic

If you have a techie mate it always helps having him watching over you.
My first build done was a Celeron 300 and I got to doing that from watching friends disassemble and work on machines.

Its not for everyone true, personally I find it enjoyable choosing the parts I want and making a "custom" build. Some online shops pre-assemble pcs based on the parts you choose.

Don't give up on the idea completely.

Same. All you need is a philips screwdriver, a bit of knowledge and some common sense.

    +1!
It really isn't rocket science...and with jumperless boards these days it's actually become a walk in the park! Also, you'll never be afraid to open it up again in future if you decide to put something else into it.

Around three years ago my brother bought a pre-build machine with a sticker on the back that said something about "breaking this seal will void warranty"...I peeled it off and ate it! lol - no I kid but really it's not something to be afraid of as long as you don't rush it (and ask for help if you don't know - the internet is a wonderful resource!).

So true! Biggest oops I almost made was putting in the wrong PSU...but luckily I never turned it on, and someone pointed it out! Lucky! But I didnt read up on that PSU....so it would have been my own fault. Seriously though, just read up....you cant go wrong

Also, if you live close enough to someone willing I'm sure you can persuade them to come on over and help (provided you have beer on tap!).

    My latest budget list includes:

Generic case + PSU (available from most online retailers) - +- R300
    G41 Chipset Motherboard +- R600
    Intel Dual Core E6xxx series +- R700 - R800
    2GB DDR2 Memory +- R500
    500GB hdd +- R500
    LiteOn DVD-Writer +- R250
    Generic Keyboard + Mouse +- R100

Haven't been doing many monitors lately, but you can get a nice 22" samsung for around R1500 (if you do some shopping).

So thats about 4500, that leaves you enough money to get Win7 pro to fit into your budget too.

    and the process has begun....

I purchased the Samsung 23' LCD on promotion from Kalahari. net for R1460.

Now, I have narrowed down my Motherboard n Processor combo to 2 possible choices:

    1- AMD Phenom ii X2 550 (R950) WITH Asus M4A785TD-V EVO AMD 785G Motherboard w/A8 + G + LK + FWa + SATA2 RAID + DVI + HDMI (R1200)

    or
    2- Intel i3-530(R1100) WITH intel media series, tom cove, intel P55 LGA1156, QPI, 4xDual DDR3 1333, Graphics on CPU (HDMI, DVI-D, VGA), 1xPCI-x16, 2xPCI-x1, 1xPCI, 4xSATA3, 2x eSATA, Gbe Lan, 8ch-Sound, Max 12xUSB, microATX (R900)

Which would be the better combo? Pls keep in mind, that i dont want to buy a seperate graphics card at the moment.

Also, if sum1 can maybe suggest a better suited Motherboards for the chosen Processors. In the same price range, of course. i dont quite understand the motherboards as yet.
