hey all

We trying to set up a better Wireless network because the wireless(not the Neotell internet connection but the local network)we are getting from the neoflex router is extremely unstable(keeps going down) and does not have a big enough wireless distance.

What we thought we could do was turn the NeoFlex Router into a modem only and then use a Wireless router to distribute the signal.

We toke the RJ45 cable from the Neoflex Router and plugged it into the WAN port on a SMC WBR14S-N2 Wireless broadband router.

We now want to be able to connect to the SMC router and have access to the internet by means of the Neoflex router being a modem only.

Is it possible to make the Neoflex router a modem only and what do we have to set up on the SMC to allow this to work?

We have tried to do this with no luck :(

I could probably help if I had any experience with the Neotel connection :P

If i'm guessing correctly the Neotel router has a section to handle its own PPPoE connection which it dials and then shares out the connection between clients connecting to the router. If so you could set the DLink router's connection type to "Cable" with a static IP.

Examples follow:
Neotel router IP: 192.168.0.1
DLink router IP 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0

Neotel Router will be configured to connect as-is. DLink WAN port connected to Neotel router. DLink internet connection settings will be:
Cable
Static IP 192.168.0.2
Gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS 192.168.0.1

Used to run similar setups to share iBurst connections :)

brilliant! worked for me too!
I am using a normal Vista home pc connected to the network wirelessly via a netgear router. Thanks for that excellent info!
I also found that when sharing an internet connection in Vista you need to activate what services you want to share on the connection. i.e. http, https, ftp etc.

There is an easyer way to do this, and it'll be all automatic.. Its simple really.. Make sure the DHPC service on the Neotel router is on... and the DHCP service on the WIFI router is off.. and Bobs your uncle.. no need to set the gateway..

On another note I prefet to set Manual IP addresses so you can use port-forwarding www.portforward.com

thanks for this amazing info.... we are trying to set up an ICS as well as a network so we can share our uncapped neotel for our business. we have 2 pc's one running xp pro which we have created as the host and the other running vista as the client. we are using a dlink router to link via and connected the neotel manually as our internet connection. we could not get the dlink to connect the neotel via pppoe connection like we used to do our iburst connection. now on our network we can see the fateway but cannot see the other computer at all neither will it ping the computer ... i am sure we are doing something wrong but need a network GURU to help us ... PLS PLS...

Thanks

Ok first of all LesleyGwen Im assuming that you are using the neotel router. This is your internet connection and your gateway. The neotel router needs to have the DHCP service turned on.

My guess is that the Dlink router also has the DHCP service turned on and it is using a different Subnet mask. What you will need to do is turn DHCP off and manually set the IP address and subnet mask on the device so that it can be on the same subnet as the neotel router. Here is an example.

Neotel Router:
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP service: ON
DHCP IP Range : 192.168.0.3 - 192.168.0.254

DLink router:
IP Address 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP Service : OFF

Set everything on the computers to AUTO and the internet will just work.

2nd option.

You say your are trying to setup connection sharing with the neotel's internet connection using pppoe. Im assuming you mean you use a Dial-up connection, with one computer as the server and the other as the client? It is possible to do it this way, but if im not mistaken I think you can only use neotel's dial-up if you connect the router to the computer with a USB connection, or with neotel prime. With this setup the IP addresses would look like this..

DLink router:
IP Address: 192.168.0.254
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP: ON
IP Address Range: 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.253

Server:
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Internet Connection Sharing: ON

Client's setting should work as Automatic but here are the manual settings:
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.0.1

The client should use the Server's Internet connection as long as the server is "Dialed-up"

Last time i checked the Server's IP Address has to be 192.168.0.1 for other computers to use internet sharing
