What was the Firewire port on the original Playstation 2 used for, or planned to be used for? Does the new slimline unit have it - or did they take it away?

it`s gone,it was used to link up playstation 2`s to each other,GT3 used it and some other games for network purposes.
Nowdays you used the network connection at the back of the slimlines or the Network adaptor to link playstation 2`s together.
Ofcourse you need to fill in a form and sent it Sony to get a network disc to set it up,thats for most games.
So it was pretty useless. Isn't Firewire quicker than the Ethernet port?
Depends on whether the PS2 comes with a gigabit ethernet port of a 100mbit one. Firewire operates at 400Mbs.

As far as I remember, the ethernet port is only 100mbit.
To horribly misquote someone, "100mbit should be enough for everybody!"
yep, no i-link port on the new ps2 slimline (pstwo)
does have the ethernet port though for network gaming and internet gaming, 100mb should be fine for gaming, its not like your gonna copy a movie from the one ps2 to the other!!!!
if you plug it into a dhcp enabled network it makes life easy, all games i have played so far do their own network setup so no need for the network access disk to play online!
One last thing : the large silver one - does it also have built-in IR?
I prefer the bigger one to the new slimline, BUT I still want built-in IR!
Yup! it has it built in.
The big machines are no longer made.
Damnit. Will have to buy a used large silver PS2 then.
Thanks!
they dont make them nomoreOriginally Posted by Dolby

I need to have a tray and not top loading - as I'm putting it in a hi-fi rack. Plus the larger size is a closer look to hi-fi components. I was quoted R1550.00 for a new black slimline which isn't too bad I guess
could get an xbox for that, or 2 gamecubes
i want a ps2... anyone feel like sponsoring me one?
i never play mine anymore, its a bit overrated
wanna sell it?
