Thread: South Africa Online Backup Services

Default South Africa Online Backup Services

    Hey.
With the advent of uncapped for the people the possibility of online backups becomes a reality in this country. I see that most of the ISPs offer some sort of service, but was just wandering if there were better alternatives and if anybody has any feedback on any available services.
    Cheers

Mozy, Amazon cloud, Dropbox and Jungledisk are the main intl ones.

I use Dropbox. Its awesome but I wouldn't recommend it for bulk gig backups...its more designed as a constant sync thing.

The Amazon one requires some tech skills afaik but should give best bang per buck.

I'd go with the MWEB business option locally but its expensive.

If you don't want to spend cash then you could just encrypt it & push the entire backup to a GDrive, but thats a bit hardcore.

There are a range of qualified solutions available that all cater for a specific market. We are a specialist service provider in the field of online data protection. Our core offering is eDoxSecure which uses the Amazon E3 infrastructure.

For offsite backups I buy servers. I pay $100 per 4TB, but I cant find a price that beats that.

Cibecs, allows you to run your own cloud backup on your own server which can also be published and accessed online creating simple firewall rules. Is a local company turned global and for trial use you can get 10 free licenses that I think last forever.

Im also looking for a decent company for backup services (corporate). I have contacted 'Metrofile' and they have give me a decent proposal. IronTree was also decent (more expensive anyway).

My priority i that i need storage in the local Jhb loop (for good speed), with decent datacenter, mirroring of the datacenter, deduplication services, long retention and start the service taking an image of the data to load in the datacenter, so only the incrementals run over the internet. Also be able to get a quick retrieval of big data (directly from the datacenter in a external HDD) in case of disaster.

Yup, Hetzner EX4 has a similar price/GB of storage. ( And they give you RAID1 redundancy )

If you are prepared to host your own server and storage solution Cibecs seems to do the job quite well. Bit level incremental backup, bit level deduplication, transfer encryption and data storage compression and also the ability to backup all volumes incl external HDD's (except flash drives as those are removable storage). I also found out it does outlook PST backup as well, actually specializes in that. I should be their sales rep

What is the point of using overseas online backups? If I have a TB of data as an initial sync it will take ages or I need to send an external overseas.

Local storage I just plug in the seed drive and its sorted.
