    Default Anybody cancelling soon?

Looking for an iBurst desktop USB / Ethernet modem second hand. And any suggestions on joining month to month and tips to prevent them from double / triple billing me? And signing up with your own modem - hopefully easy?

I am in an ADSL / Neotel deadzone, so my only alternative at the moment is iBurst (spending way too much on 3G and iBurst is still cheaper). But I don't want to pay R2,800 upfront and I don't want to sign contracts, so I am looking at purchasing the equipment upfront.

    I am in Pretoria...

Firstly, make absolutely sure that your area has good coverage, borrow a friend's modem if you have to.
Just because iBurst's website map says you have good coverage, it doesn't mean it has.

Secondly, pm r00igev@@r and ask him if iBurst has any second hand modems laying around at a good price.
    If not try Gumtree: http://johannesburg.gumtree.co.za/f-...earchFormZtrue
Meet the person in a safe area and don't put money into anybody's account until you have the modem.

Sign up with iBurst on month to month (Don't sign any contracts) and pay via credit card or ETF. Debit order will be hard to cancel, ask Fur.

I get download speeds of +-300kbps during the day and +-900kbps during late evening.
So test the modem during the day and evening. I hope this helps a bit...

Sending this from iBurst as we speak. Borrowed my father-in-law's iBurst desktop modem to test it out first - getting full signal (at least, all the signal LEDs are on). Speed - seems about 0.4 Mbps, but I'll test as the evening goes on. Was good enough for a Skype call.

Was hoping to take along my father-in-law's router and plug it into the iBurst modem there and then, then, if everything is fine, do an EFT to the person.

    Thanks Madhawk - much appreciated!

As you know, until the end of this month you have free iBurst internet between midnight and 08h00.

This will be a good opportunity for you to test your father-in-laws modem without wasting his data.

Also to see if you get any disconnects during the evening.

You can use Orbit or Download manager to set your downloads and leave it downloading until 08h00.

    Orbit: http://www.filehippo.com/download_orbit_downloader/

    Download manager: http://www.filehippo.com/download_fr...nload_manager/

Speedtest.net change your settings to kilobits.

Copy and paste your results here. I would like to see what you get during the day and evening.

    Thanks.

Will do. Have some stuff I need to send out (client statements on an automated run per email) so will see whether that works well (about 200 emails). Can you use somebody else's SMTP server over iBurst? Or do you need to use theirs?

Did a speedtest using Speedtest.NET again earlier, download speed was up to about 900 kbps.

As far as I know if you're sending over port 25 you have to use theirs, otherwise if your mail server supports port 587 or 465 you're OK.

Trust me, that would be the biggest mistake of your life.

If all goes well & there is any good karma left in this world, I should be leaving in 2 or 3 months. Just waiting for Telkom to finish the infrastructure. Then I am running like the wind & I am going to celebrate like I just had my first kid. I will invite buddies over for some drinks, hells man, I'll even get some cigars. You have no idea how much I have been waiting for that day.

Anyway, don't let me upset your iBurst expectations (I hope you don't have any),

I am sure it will be a smooth ride for you....

Telkom promised lines in my area first middle of June, then middle of July. My biggest concern is lack of ADSL - nobody can confirm this, but there was talk that our exchange is full.

So I can continue to use expensive 3G with no alternative for months, or I can at least get something a little bit cheaper in the form of iBurst. Absolutely no trust in Telkom helping me anytime soon.

So far (my first 12 hours with iBurst) has been pretty great - much more stable than 3G! Still - this is using my father in law's modem - yet to locate a seller for one! r00igev@@ - what about a 2nd hand modem for sale?

PM me to put your modem on Prepaid as you'll require a backup.

Well, if you have had good service from them so far them I am happy for you. I bought my Modem from them 2nd hand for 1k. Do they still sell them 2nd hand?

    LOL

You mean a backup for "if" ADSL goes down?

    Sorry to bump this.

I have a potential seller for an iBurst modem. Wants R1,700 for it. Problem is, how would I be able to make sure that the modem still works? He says the modem's UID has to be registered with iBurst before it will work with my father in law's iBurst account (which I was planning on using to test it). Also, he lives in an area which, according to him, has no iBurst coverage.

    Any suggestions?

He owns a iBurst modem, but he has no coverage. That sounds a bit suspicious.

If you can't test the modem at your place or his place, I won't take the risk.

R1700 is alot of money to lose, so I would be patient and look somewhere else.

    That's my suggestion...

I hear you. His story is that he moved to an Estate (the estate at least exists) that has Smart Village internet services and no iBurst coverage, thus the selling of the modem.

Is the part about the modem's UID being registered on an account before you are able to connect true?
