HTC Magic running 2.2 Froyo before OTA Desire updates :)

So I was running the updated HTC Magic with sense ui. It was the "official" 1.5 cupcake release.

I decided to take the plunge and do some research and try and flash my phone to the latest and greatest.

It took about 8 hours of research and trial and error untill I finally managed to remove the "perfect SPL" which has S-ON. This "S-ON" is basically security on. It means you cant have access to your phone properly. The perfect SPL means that you cant fastboot and load an image as it says remote access not allowed.

At the moment im running froyorider 0.4 and im thinking of loading on cyanogen 6. The other one I was thinking of was smoki, as smoki is an original OS and has access to all the normal desktop etc. that is included in froyo. Apparently froyorider and cyanogen dont look like froyo anyway.

im going out to a client now, but I will share the love later... ill give exact steps as to what to load from where, and how.

It took me about 2 days of research and I almost bricked my phone. In the end, it kinda made sense for me, about what to do, and why, but then I had to take about 5 or 6 guides and kinda mash them together, cous most of the guides you find are for the EU rom or the ASIA rom, and its not quite the same process.

I would recommend only performing this process in Windows XP SP3, as I tried on my Windows 7 x64 and it kinda failed, and almost lead to me bricking my phone.

If you phone doesnt boot, its not the end of the world, you just need to repeat the previous step.

I created a gold card as well, so to be able to create a gold card, you will need a USB -> Micro SD card reader. Luckily my Girlfriend had a flash drive USB that takes a MicroSD. They cost about R250 for a 8gig from suppliers. The other way of creating a goldcard is to use a USB card adaptor.

So Ill post later about the whole process, but luckily I had my GF's machine already setup with a dual boot to XP and a USB MicroSD flash drive. If you dont have these things, PLEASE DONT TRY AND FLASH YOUR PHONE!

Go and buy a Kingston USB MicroSD card. I used the following card that I bought from Frontosa kingston MBLYG2/8GB , black , miCro-SD card reader + 8Gb class4 miCro-sd + 2x Adapter ( sd and mini-sd ) , 32.89x15.3x7.66mm , 13mb/sec - 2 years warranty it was about R200 bucks
Setup Windows XP Pro 32bit SP3 on another hard drive or dual boot, as I cant guarantee its gonna work on anything else.

If you follow the process, you are quite safe with your phone, but obvously I cant be held responsible for anything.

Im currently running Froyorider 0.7 on my phone, and have setup sipdroid to make voip calls to any IM, as well as having sipdroid on my GF's phone, letting me call her for only data charge. Froyorider is currently running on a mod of cyanogen 's mod. it uses the latest radio and SPL, where cyanogen uses an older radio and SPL.

After you have the perfect SPL and radio removed, you can move back and forth between radios and try different roms. REMEMBER TO ALWAYS CHECK and FLASH THE RADIO and SPL BEFORE the ROM, OTHERWISE YOU WILL BRICK YOU PHONE! --- remember radio and SPL BEFORE - BEFORE - BEFORE - you flash the rom....

i got the afternoon off at work, so i stayed at work and tried to do all this with my phone. it's a confusing story, but eventually i managed to root my phone. i found your blog post (http://cptgeek.blogspot.com/2010/07/...tions-for.html) and followed it all the way until i got to the goldcard thing. i need to get my sd card out my phone and into a card reader to get that going. tomorrow i'll also download the update.

one question: froyorider 0.7 isn't there anymore when i go to download. would any other version of it work fine?


EDIT: i've managed to make the goldcard, loaded the european update (downdate?) and now i'm here:

i can flash the recovery no problem, however, going according to the blog and one reply, i still can't update the spl or the radio (access denied). i've tried from adb and i've tried from recovery mode, but neither allow it. how would i get that to s-off? also, if i am to load a cyongenmod, would i have to update the radio and spl? i've been at this since friday. :S
