no idea about guild wars .... but, i play WoW and , believe me, it is amazing - be warned though, you will get addicted![]()
I skipped WoW, went for GW - cheaper (no subs).

GuildWars :
No subscription [only pay once for the box]. Got a structured PvP setup [similar to Unreal Tournament] . Got a PvE campaign, which is very linear and once you complete it there's nothing much else to see in it.
You can create a PvP max-level character right at the start and go straight into PvP, or do the PvE campaign and "build-up" a character the classical way and then PvP with it [items and such gained from PvE carries to PvP etc].
Entire system works on "instanced" zones. In other words, you and your party get their own version of the map [like diablo]. While in this map you will NOT see anyone else, just your team and the mobs...
Problem is they blended PvP and PvE to such an extend that you actually NEED to go through the campaign multiple times with different classes to unlock the items/skills to use in PvP. Although you can unlock skills by winning PvP matches, it's still easier/faster to just repeat the campaign [=boring + grind]
[Even though you can make a max-level char for PvP you don't get all the skills, must unlock it].
-Conclusion :
Not a long term game. You'll finish the PvE campaign in 2 weeks of extended play [just like any other other single player RPG]. Then you will probably PvP "on-the-side" here and there. As in, you will probably log on, play a few matches [counter-strike style] and log off to play something else. It's nice in this way that you don't need to constantly "level" your character, you can stop playing for 2 months and then log on and do a quick burst of PvP matches with buddies and so on. But that's about it.
World of Warcraft [only played short bits]:
Will cost you something like $15 per month excluding the actual box.[Unless you play on the illegal local servers, then it's obviously free]
Rich, "open" PvE side [there is no ending]. You will take awhile to max your character, and there's always things to do regardless of level. PvP, also rather open and can get it in various forms.
Doesn't use "instancing" so you will see players wander around the places. You will have to compete for resources [unlike in GW where you get your own copy of the map, no one else to "steal your kill"].
WoW got alot more "longevity" . There is at least "some" roleplay, GW doesn't have any [just like there isn't any in diablo].
In the end
To summarise it [don't take it literally, if you know the two games, you should know the subtle difference between the two] :
Guildwars = Fantasy Counter-Strike with Half-Life Coop Campaign to get the guns to use in CS.
World of Warcraft = Morrowind Online without the graphics , but more interesting combat system and the ability to kill other people.
As you can see, both can keep you busy for ages depending on your needs. GW is defintely "fast+instant action" , WoW is more a slow "build+level" effect. So depends on the time you have.
People end up doing this:
They get both, i mean R350 for Guildwars isn't more than any other single player game you would've bought. They play WoW and then when they get tired of the "grind/leveling" they switch to GW for a quick burst of PvP action.

Thats the joy of instanced areas in GW, but that means no meeting random ppl and helping each other out. But that also means no wierd people running up to you in WOW (mostly elves) taking off thier clothes, and dancing naked everywhere you go (it happens).
I hear WOW has more items and GW has very few..

Well, there is a large variety of items, but it's still very limited. For example, you can't "pick up" ANY armor. You buy armor from a store. End result : Most armor has the exact same stats and looks the same. You can mod your armor by adding runes to it [which only increase your attributes and lowers your health], so still doesn't make it very unique. These runes you ALSO just buy from the NPCs [although it is dropped too].Is this true?? Because i looove lots of stuff. Like buying ale and beer and giving your charachter it for a boost. There are diablo style of "gold" [very rare ] and "blue" [semi-rare] weapon drops, BUT their stats usually do not have anything extraordinary about them, usually the difference between a gold and a normal item of equal level is +2 energy vs +5 energy etc [while you have 70 energy anyway]

Reason is: Because all stuff carries over into PvP, they "balanced" PvE not to "unbalance" PvP . So you can assume you won't pick up anything that will really give you a huge advantage.
In the end, no armor drops, and you will probably only use 2 or 3 weapons depending on your main class. There is no potions/pills in the game, so none of that.
There is a elaborate crafting sytem though. To get armor you have to bring a certain selection of "Raw materials" to the shop/crafter. Now there's ALOT of crafting items, but since their ONLY purpose is to buy armor it's somewhat "fluffy". You can salvage any item into "Raw material" as well [i.e. bows become wood] . But yea, it looks cool on paper in practice , once you have your armor then all you can do with your material is trade with it.
There aren't much else, there are ale which only purpose is to make your screen go woozy [drunk effect] . There are dye to color your armor+items.
There are one or two "end game " sets of armor which are really really expensive [absurdly expensive] , but the only diff betwen that and the normal lvl 20 armor is the looks in general :P
Personnaly i would'nt play either, because of the lack of help from the support teams at the designers of the games. I'm an Eve-Online person myself, and always will be
EVE-ONLINE, the first, true, and largest MMORPG Universe.... hehe....
was it even before UO?
i wish for something that looks like Guild Wars but has the depth of UO. Is WoW better than UO?

All you see when you start trading is "Leather Robe" : 200 gold + 10 leather squares + 2 silk sheets.
When you got those items you can buy it, simple as that. So it's not really "crafting" more like an additional currency they threw in.
But i must add there is an economy in the game [if you can call it that]. You can for example buy all your material from a material trader [or salvage items and hope you get it from drops]. But the way things works is, the more an item is being bought from a material trader the more expensive it becomes to buy. So prices are dynamic.
So the most popular classes' armor becames insanely expensive [or rather the materials needed to craft them]. It's also no coincidence that Black Dye [ an item to change the colour of your armor, there's various colours to use] is one of the most expensive "useless" items in the general game. In fact at one stage 1 bottle of Black Dye [only usable on 1 piece] was more expensive than the entire set of armor you would use it on.....
Same economy applies to runes and such. It's amusing to find that a rune that increase the primary statistic for the Mesmer class by 3 costs 150 gold , but the same type of rune for the Monk class costs 5000 gold. You can easily deduce which class is more popular/in demand. [In fact i'd go as far as saying : If you are uncertain as to which attributes to use on your character, just visit the rune trader and look which runes are the most expensive..then you know]
Luckily the same applies when you sell materials to a Material Trader, how much he gives you depends on how much people are selling the item to the trader. But sadly this doesn't seem to work quite as well. Players sell stuff to other players and not to trader [because you can get more from players], so you get a messed up scenario of trader selling extremely high and buying extremely low. But Anet is working on it though.
I am however aware there are players that just buy/sell stuff, that's all they do. Most players go out and 'farm' for rare materials and then sell it to get some cash, others stare at the trader prices like stockbrokers. When the price drops they buy like crazy, when it raise again they sell.....
