Thread: Afrihost useless

    Default Afrihost useless

anyone thinking of using afrihost is wasting their time, with all their shaping and throttling systems they are pretty useless for anything right now.

i phoned in about slow speeds and they said their speeds will improve with this new system, then seacom went down and i waited patiently, now seacom is restored im getting 0.10kbs download speed. on a 4mb line, change over to axxess prepaid and what ya know. full speed.

im moving over to mweb from the 1st so i hope i get better service from them

Well I am with Afrihost since the 12 July and I have downloaded 25GB sofar mostly after hours and weekends. I don't have a 4mb line only a measly 384k. And I have yet to experience this shaping or throttling. That said I don't do torrents or newsgroups. So for what I pay and what I get I am totally happy with Afrihost.

I feel the pain. 4MB line, I get 256k on speedtest. That is absolutely ludicrous. And i have only done 72 Gigs for the month.

I was with AFRIHOST 4MB Uncapped, but moved over to MWEB 4MB Uncapped.

Although MWEB shape alot( especially during the day ), they never seem to throttle your line.

There is a big difference between shaping and throttling.
I can accept being shaped, but not throttled.

I am happy with MWEB 4MB Uncapped ADSL so far.

One can shape part of the internet so that it appears throttled. Torrents on Mweb are shaped very heavily, especially during the day. Completion times are sometimes 15 days in the future or are so low (100bps), you won't hang around to see what happens. Rapidshare, Hotfile and other filesharing HTTP sites are also 'throttled' to death.

    Hmmmmmmmmmm.

I am with AfriHost but very much over it... Was good in the beginning but I can't remember the last time my 4meg line was actually anything close to 4megs....

I was patiently waiting for SeaCom to come back online. Now that it has, I'm still getting a max of 40kb/s. That's any time of the day and night. WTF?!?

Anyone else recommend moving over to MWeb? I admit I do quite a bit of Torrent downloads. But its all my traffic that's being shaped. If I wanted a 384kb line I would have ordered one. I don't really see the point in paying for a 4mb line and only ever getting 384kb/s.

I've had it with afrihost honestly. I sent them a mail yesterday asking when to expect normal speeds again. Im running a 4mb line as well, the speed seemed fine on tuesday evening, going up to about 180Kb/s...so I managed to get some downloading down but yesterday and today its been absolute ****. After mailing them they replied back with that whole new policy of theirs and that they monitor users on an hour to hour basis, so apparently my line was throttled or shaped because i have been overusing the service according to them? I've downloaded 38gigs this month and last month about 60gb and I didnt intend going over 60gb either. It feels like they just decide when to increase and decrease the speed, at one point in the day i managed to connect up to the durban server on speedtest at 3.44mb/s....thereafter it looked like this:

Frustrating isnt the word. I enjoyed the speed for only one night after the seacom repair and now its as if the cable is still being repaired according to my speed. Sorry for blabbing away guys...but damn...afrihost needs to get their act together

I am on Afrihost and very happy. Prepaid 20GB + 20GB for R380pm. No problems and running at full speed (4mbs). No idea what uncapped is like. Equates to R9.50 per gig.

@dabbler, yes i would imagine that you are getting good service with that particular package as they don't shape their capped customers.

Afrihost says for uncapped customers: "But rest assured, You will never be capped no matter what you use the account for - However, we do reserve the right to shape and throttle your account if we deem it necessary."

How do they expect us to download or even enjoy the internet if they cap our speeds so terribly? Right now i am getting terrible speed fluctuations, its taking quite a while to load a 2 minute video on youtube.

let me just say that afrihost is the most useless company i have ever come across, and whats worse, even though my line was so slow last night i couldnt even open gmail i cant leave them for another month, i gave notice to leave at the beginning of this month, i finishing the application for mweb and was about to click accept when i thought let me just phone afrihost and make sure they not billing me for next month, and what ya know.....they said i have to wait a full month from date of cancellation, so im stuck with them for another month, i cant explain how pissed off and frustrated i am right now.

i hate being ripped of by idiots who obviously have no clue what they doing.
and i hate the fact im paying for 4mb line speed and getting dialup speeds.

stay away from afrihost if you know whats good for you, and if you with them now, give notice asap cauz its gonna take awhile before you are free of their evil grasp
