Ok, i know this is probably here somewhere but ive searched and i just can't find it.

I have a WRT54G and would like to boost the signal just a lil bit so I get reception throughout my house, is this possible with a firmware upgrade?

If so which one and please remember I don't know too much about this so a user friendly firmware would be appreciated

Thanks for all the help, got DDWrt and it seems to be working well, how high would you push it from a safety perspective? Can the lil linksys handle 252mW?
 
The concensus is 80milliwatts max 100mW as you can cause extra "noise" depending on the type of antenna being used. Also a heat consideration.
But 252mW is a no go . 100 mW is the legal max i think ?
 
Have pushed mine up to 200mW for a while, but usually I get better thoughput at 100mW.

Iv also heard that the legal limit is 100mW EIRP (Which mean you cant use an antenna, in my understanding. Using 50mW + 5dBi gain, one is already exceeding the legal limit)
 
Anything above around 120mw is when the Broadcom radios start becoming very noisy. The limit is 100mw, and this EIRP as th0rn indicated depends on your antenna too.
 
firmware on jawug

what firmware is being used on the jawug nodes? OpenWRT, freifunk, DD-WRT or something else. can you link the OpenWRT and freifunk wrt54g's to each other in a mesh? TheRoDent which do you recommend?

YES, and any other fw's for that matter.
the lonehill/fourways/sunninghill network runs op openwrt, Master/client setups.
As do the kensington guys, I think rodent also runs a similiar setup.
The wild west guys run freifunk, in ad-hoc mode.

essentially, freifunk is a package that can be loaded over openwrt, it adds functionality to the standard openwrt fw.

my recommendation, if you moderately comfortable using linux, go openwrt/freifunk, otherwise DD-wrt
