Thread: New VoIP service in SA

Default New VoIP service in SA

    hi guys,

i found a new VoIP service based in SA using the american viper network. call rates to some countries are even cheaper than skype. thing is, i'm having a problem creating an account - the site hangs when attempting to go to the signup page to create a user account. just wondering if it hangs for anyone else as well. the site is http://www.vipernetworks.co.za/

it seems interesting cos i think there wouldn't be a problem buying credit from their store - they give denominations in both dollars and rands. you can download the software and use a headset, or buy an ip phone from them. cool thing with their ip phone is i think they give you a voip phone number for incoming calls. any thoughts??

if anybody who isn't affected by the saix problem could please test this service, seeing as you can purchase in rands, and let us know if it's worth it or not would be great. currently i can't even log on to msn messenger thanks to saix, and this isn't doesn't seem to work either. otherwise i would have provided some feedback.

The IP phones around vary in quality and performance. You are better off with an ATA which these guys will configure for you to their network. I think thats the problem you will all have.
A good ATA will cost about ZAR 700.00. This will then enable you to have a phone number anywhere you want. IE UK, France Germany etc. The costs of maintaining the line (Line Rental) could be expensive for you guys in SA. Most calls from those area codes will cost about €0.04 cents per minute.
If any one is interested I have a mickey mouse system running in Spain and would like to help if I can.

there's another company as well http://www.phonehome.co.za
since not everybody has access to a credit card (students etc.), they have an option of direct deposit via internet transfer. their rates are 20c a minute to the major countries which may be slightly higher than skypes 12c.

however i'm more than willing to pay the few extra cents in support of south african companies showing an initiative. tried it out the other day and it works just as good as skype does. may not be as advanced as skype is (in terms of instant messaging etc.) but it does the job of telephony quite well.

Remeber that you have to carry your own bandwidth at 20c a minute. Telkom shapping on International breaks the VOIP dammit !

What can I say, get an unshapped account and see how that works for our tests it works really well. If you want email me I will give you a test account to play with. info@voicenet.co.za

If you need any another help shout on the voipforum.co.za
