The cell c store is also buried deep inside the concrete cube that is eikestad mall and the signal can't be very good..... Anyone? Anyone?
It so happens I'm in Stellenbosch today, am sitting at La Romantica (Paradyskloof) and did a speed test to Joburg:

10.67Mbits/sec down / 2Mbits/sec down - very nice, Cell C keep this up.

More Stellenbosch tests, on the other side of Stellenbosch, this time inside an office building in Plankenbrug, close to the Simonsberg shop:

Joburg: 5.06 Mbits down / 1.74 Mbits up

New York: 3.4 Mbits down / 1.09 Mbits up

The Netgear wireless routing appears to be slowing ping times slightly from last night.
    local was 80 - 100
    international was 250-300

I'll add ping times every week or so to keep tabs on whether the cellc service remains constant.

While more testing is probably needed these tests do make for some interesting questions.
    1) Why if you are in Cape Town does the speedtest.net think Newlands (450mi) is further away than Johannesburg (300mi)? - Looks to me like they don't have all their peering sorted out. Which means if you are in CPT and you have traffic for CPT it will route all the way up to JHB and back down again to CPT.
    2) Upload is very inconsistent.
    3) International ping looks a bit high, would expect closer to 300ms.
    how come?

Also, I expect 800ms latency from vodacon, so this is rockstar quality at a decent price. Compared to Vodacon

So for comparison here are my Vodacom speed and pingtests. As you can see they are much closer to 300ms, a far cry from your claimed 800ms.

Cell C stellenbosch was outa stock of the 60 Gig sim (now i can at least afford food heheehe....) so got the 24 gig. Tested inside shop (bottom middle of big concrete mall) and got ~5 Mbit/s dl (Cell C modem). Tested at my varsity dept with my vodafone k3565 and getting 2.8 Mbit/s dl and rather paltry 0.4 Mbit/s up. Don't know why up is so slow, might just be the location! But I am happy as I don't have to FORK out R389 pm for 2gig to vodascum anymore!!!!!

OK just did some new tests, this time not standing near my laptop (modem plugged in right next to my arm....)

    Jo'burg Cell C server: Dl 3.69 Mbit/s
    Up 0.31 Mbit/s
    Ping 0.178 ms

New York server: Dl 2.31 Mbit/s
    Up 0.18 Mbit/s
    Ping 0.718 ms

Happy with the New york dl but wtf up with ping?! Maybe time of day (america waking up....)

Will test later tonight at my flat and see if there is a difference!
