Apple unveils smaller, cheaper Apple TV device

Apple Inc. announced a smaller, cheaper version of its Apple TV device for streaming movies and television shows over the Internet and into the living room. It also unveiled a new line of iPods, including a touch-screen Nano model.

I think that it is very cool - for that price. But that is not where Apple will be getting it's money from. They will get it from all the music and movie downloads. Very clever and well timed to do this. Especially with their Ping Social network. Too bad that videos are only 720p.

Would it take off in South Africa, what options do we have to buy content online that Apple TV will usurp?

F-ing A, I want it! Then I can kiss DStv good bye.

To put it into context, DStv costs me nearly R600 per month. At $0.99 (about R7.50) per show, that would get me 80 TV shows per month, or 20 per week. That's way more than I watch now. Throw in a couple of movies, and I think it would still be cheaper. The only problems would be live sport, and the fact that streaming all that content would require an uncapped broadband connection. Not sure whether it would even work on my 384 MWEB account?

Good point. No, it won't stream on that. You could get the old AppleTV which can download shows, and store them.

It's pretty impressive, but I'm still sold on a Mac Mini for a home theatre device. I'd rather install Perian and know that all of my video files will play without any problems. The only #Fail I see with the new Apple TV is the lack of a USB interface.

Good luck with that seeing as it's running an ARM chip. You can do it on the older AppleTV though.

Screw the sport. Once you've watched one rugby or cricket season you've watched them all. Don't even get me started on F1.

Apple could (in theory) crack a massive hole in home entertainment by getting their iTunes content released in SA this way. I would cancel my DStv subscription instantly if they did manage to get this product here.

All they need is a cheap data network on ADSL lines and the will to do it.

Geez, 16 years of democracy and I am still not allowed to buy beer on Sundays or in a supermarket... I hold up little chance of the entertainment protection racket that Monochoice enjoys being cracked any time soon.

I have had an Apple TV for almost two years now. I should actually cancel my dstv as I can't remember the last time I watched anything on dstv

If I was back in the states I'd buy one in a New York minute just for the netflix and iTS but here in SA we've got expensive broadband and no access to content.
