Thread: NeoBroadband Fibre versus ADSL

  1. #1

    Default NeoBroadband Fibre versus ADSL

NeoBroadband Fibre 5 Mbps versus ADSL 4 Mbps

Neotel recently launched their NeoBroadband Fibre 5 Mbps service aimed at the business market. This is how it stacks up against a business ADSL service.

There is no mention of latency....Will the latency be comparable to that of Diginet?

Was also hoping to see some evaluation of the products, however, they are priced quite steep just to try them out for a review. I'm sure a short trial for comparison could be organized with Mweb, but a short fibre trial could be more tricky =)

The article starts off well, but lacks detail and sparks many questions in my head:

    - How well does it actually perform? (any current customers?)
    - What's latency like?
    - What is the contention ratio?
    - Where/how does Neotel peer? (JINX/CINX, private peering?)
    - What is the customer equipment like?
    - Will Neotel route the little /29 block to your firewall and supply a /30 subnet for the outside?

Neotel's website is just as light on details:
    http://www.neotel.co.za/wps/portal/n...data_solutions

What about (fibre) coverage? Where's the Neotel fibre map? Last time I looked, there was no Neotel fibre of any sort near our office building, but Telkom and DFA has fibre trenches going past our building.

Oh, the article forgot to mention that the 5Mbps service includes "two complimentary SIP channels". Um, okay, so are those like phone lines that we can connect our asterisk PABX to? What are the costs involved for SIP calls?

+1... couldn't gather much from the article besides for the fact that the upload speed is symmetrical to download on the neotel product, which could be a big factor that sets the products apart. Would be great to have some actual evaluation/test results... else what's the point? hehe

5 Mps upstream is great, but how does it help if neotels coverage does not extend to other areas where you need to connect to ?

Sigh what a weak article. Without any actual speeds or latencies the comparison is meaningless.
NO to e-toll, NO to e-tags! Why the inefficient e-toll system? We pay tax on salaries, fuel, and vehicle driver's licenses. Stop it NOW!

All I saw was a price comparison which doesnt count for alot against when comparing two services like that.
We are interested in how they perform!!

i see we have a few sheep following with +1 without a reply of their own, i blame education system. however it's pointless to compare on what they say they can deliver by just making up a table of product A's speed VS product B's speed without giving us at least contention ration and real world performance indicators.
Let us begin by doubting every statement. Let us find a way of subjecting every statement to the test of experiment.

Also, would they provide say 2.5mb connections if you didn't feel like forking out R5.5k pm. What are the options?

Ah nm, found some info. Why is this not part of the article?

    5 Fibre to building 1Mbps R1 600 0
    5 Fibre to building 2Mbps R3 050 0
    5 Fibre to building 5Mbps R5 100 2
    5 Fibre to building 10Mbps R8 200 4
    5 Fibre to building 15Mbps R11 250 5

They're comparing with ADSL - not diginet. I wish we could get 4MB diginet at R2500.
