Default Adsl Self Install option on a fibre optic line

    Hi there,

I am trying to order ADSL and i have been told that i cannot do self install as my line is a fibre optic line and it is not permitted by Telkom to do self installs.

I had ADSl about 2 years ago in this same house but now i am to pay R500 for they techie to come to my house and plug my modem in for me, no thank you, im not stupid.

Anybody had similar issues, please shed some light,

    Thanks
    Genuine Telkom Hater

Someone is feeding you a real enormous load of BS.

There is NO WAY there is a fibre to your house.
Phone again and try and get a more knowledgeable Call Centre person on the line.

They told me the same thing recently.

I called back again and spoke to another person. When he repeated the same garbage I asked to speak to his supervisor. He quickly backed down and allowed the self-install to go through.

They don't mean that there is fibre all the way to your home. What is meant is that your local exchange has been upgraded to fibre.
Telkom insists on charging a fee for ADSL installations at these exchanges, however if you kick up a fuss they quickly back down.

No. There is a fibre to every single Telkom exchange.

So which one are they converting to fibre at the moment?

    Probably this one:
    Exchange <--> copper <--> SDC

No. That will ALWAYS be copper. There is NO fibre between the SDC and your house.

What about the SDC and the exchange?

I definitely know they are upgrading something to fibre. I had a whole bunch of telkom techies fixing a fault here at home a few months back and they were discussing which ones had been upgraded to fibre and which ones hadn't.

When you call their ADSL Sales Line they also mention to you if your exchange (or whatever it is called) has been upgraded to fibre.

No. There is NEVER fibre from the SDC to the exchange, only copper.

    Read it. Understand.

There won't be ANY fiber FROM the exchange to your house.

    Ever.

Until LLU happens we are stuck with COPPER from the exchange TO the house.
