Thread: SKYPE ON 384KBPS LINE

    Question SKYPE ON 384KBPS LINE

    Hi

Would I be able to use Skype on a 384kbps Telkom connection? I have a 384 Telkom Simple package - mostly for my wife to use the free landline calls after hours. I will be going to Tanzania shortly and would like to use Skype to keep contact. They have satelite on that side.

I also have a 1GB cap - how quickly will using Skype gobble that up?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I use Skype on my 384 MWeb ADSL and its fine... Not sure how long 1GB will last - I use the MWeb uncapped offering

Skype works just fine on on my 384kbps connection. I have uncapped for some time now, so don't monitor the usage anymore.
From my capped usage days, I seem to remember that a one hour video call used about 50MB. With audio only, you probably could talk all month.

To save MBs, use the voice/chat feature of Skype instead of video.

That should save you a few MBs.

Also use it on my 384kb wisp connection. Only voice though, lag becomes a problem with video on, but it may only because I am on a wireless connection.

Skype has no problems running on a 384k with full screen video... also 1gb will actually last for a lot of video calling!

Yeah 384k lines are fine for skype. Not always fine with video.

Skype does not use alot of bandwith when you call and receive calls but you sometimes become a supernode and then it eats your bandwith. Something like 50mb per day.
So if you dont use skype Sign Out. Especially on a 1gb account.

works just fine, use my 384k with skype to speak to my uncle in the UK and a friend in Germany, it's really good actually even with video ( even though the quality is a bit low ). it can be really quick too with very little delay.- as good as a telephone most times.
I also have an uncapped account, so dont have to worry about going over any limit.

384k works great with voice. For 1gig you can talk for hours. Even a top up will be way cheaper than calling on a cell or landline.

Sure, the 384 Telkom line will be OK, but what about the connection on the remote side? Doesn't satellite have a significant lag compared to ADSL?
