Don't use SABC to fund sport says SABC CEO

The acting chief executive of the SABC, Robin Nicholson, has asked Parliament to come up a new way of funding sport, saying on Tuesday that sports rights deals are costing the public broadcaster around R500 million a year in losses.

It's not like they show that much sport anyway, so where could a R500m loss possibly come from?

    ROFL.

This is comparable to the new trend: Municipalities sponsoring sport events.
Soon municipalities will be able to dictate who in the municipal region is not charged for services whilst dictating who gets over-charged ... oh wait ... did I say soon?

Point is, sport is not supposed to be a money sump, it should fund itself, and the individual sports boards must fund the growth of the individual sports themselves to keep their cash cows operating.

The SABC should not be funding anything - they should cease to exist

The guy cannot be serious! Why is DSTV then buying expensive rights to rugby, cricket, golf, etc. and making big money?

Does the SABC broadcasting anything other than soccer? I have no issue with the "beautiful game", but it does not seem to be making money if you look at the current WC stadium debacle.

Dude the reason dstv make so much money is the number of people paying their biggest subscription. Let's say 800000 are paying the 550, that amounts to plenty money. That is forgetting the people paying smaller fees of 159 and 299 or something. That is also without advertising.

Adverts pay for most of dstv's sport anyhow i would imagine.

Local soccer does not make you money when you only have one or two games a weekend, supersport saved SA soccer if you ask me.

I agree with you completely. That's why I am saying that if ol' Robin is willing to spend the bucks on quality sport, they will attract viewers and make more (advertising) money. I am sure the majority of people paying the full package do it for the sport.

I say let the people who actually watch SABC programs pay for it .. not my concern if that idiotic company don't make a profit on sport.

Without a doubt, i would not even have tv if it was not for sport. I can get everything else off the web. Better than sitting through 5 minutes discovery adverts .

I will however tell you the 550 i pay a month for sport is damn cheap. The entertainment value for that 550 is unbeatable. The quality of the sport is also worth the cash. SABC for instance will never move over hd.

    Check out http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthre...-R36-per-month

SS1, 2 & 3 for R36 p/m. Get yourself a a DVB-H receiver and phone that does and HDMI out and output it to your TV.
