British pop star Lily Allen has been extremely vocal about piracy issues in the UK, usually falling on the ‘piracy is bad’ side of the argument. Because of the abuse her blog was suffering due to her opinions, Allen decided to withdraw from the argument for a while.
Now it appears that Lily is making a comeback on the issue, and proves that she actually has a rather weak grasp on the issues surrounding piracy. After having made such profound comments as “stealing is not really a human right,” Allen has decided that she’s actually happy with people buying and selling pirated copies of her music.
“If someone comes up with a burnt copy of my CD and offers it to you for £4 I haven’t a problem with that as long as the person buying it places some kind of value on my music,” said Allen.
So it seems that Miss Allen is less concerned about damage to the music industry and artists caused by criminal syndicates, and is rather more self-centered in her concern, focusing her worry instead about the intrinsic value of her music – which she ironically measures through the exchange of money.
Is she concerned about the lack of monetary worth placed on her particular brand of pop? Or is she yearning to leave her own cultural stain on the global music landscape? Surely, if she is happy with people distributing illegal copies of her music, then she would prefer they at least propagate it for free, rather than placing money in the hands of piracy syndicates.
Perhaps she just wants people to support their local small-time music pirate, operating out of mom’s basement. Then again, she can’t really seem to make up her mind at all, telling the audience at a 2007 New York show “Don’t buy my album, its rubbish. You can download it for free anyway. I don’t make money on record sales, so just come to my gigs. F*** the records.”
So if we are to understand correctly, Lily Allen doesn’t condone piracy, but also doesn’t care if you pirate. She would also like people to place some sort of monetary worth on her music, but encourages people to not buy her albums, as they are rubbish anyway. She would much prefer people to come and watch her perform live the same songs from the “rubbish” album.
Maybe Lily Allen really doesn’t know what she is trying to say, and should just keep her opinion to herself.
