E-book readers are popping up left right and centre and with even governments releasing their reports in e-book formats, the lifespan of paper as we know it may be coming under threat.

The Kindle was recently challenged by the Nook, an e-book reader released by book publisher Barnes and Noble and then Apple jumped onboard with the iPad. This week saw a number of rumours popping up of many of the big names climbing into the arena, with the first shadows of a possible Microsoft ereader showing up!

One of the ‘outsiders’ that has been a little more intriguing is the mysterious upcoming release from LG. By April, LG plan to have a product on shelves that will ‘compete with Apple and Amazon’. LG has recently been showing off solar-powered technology specifically created for e-readers and they have a fantastic flexible e-paper display that has already turned up in the Skiff reader. Add to this the constant name dropping of Google’s operating system, this may make for a potent combination.
However, what all the new kids on the block dont have yet are the backing of publishers, and it is kinda pointless having an e-book reader without e-books to read!
