Miro in action on OSX

As you may know, I have gone completely open source in my personal computing environment and in my small business. I went the Ubuntu road and am loving it. One of the adjustments is the switch to new software to enjoy my media content with and the bundled video players in Ubuntu are great but they did lack some stylistic elements. It is one thing for a video play to play movies brilliantly but it is a bonus of the player looks slick and offers you a little more. I have to admit that I actually use different players for different formats on my Ubuntu machines. I noticed smoother playback using VLC which I had to grab from the Ubuntu Synaptics because the default Movie Player did experience stutter with some formats. VLC is brilliant and extremely feature rich, but I use it for what it can offer when need be. I did however continue to shop around online and stumbled upon Miro Player.

What makes Miro so nice is the look and feel of it. The guys did go out of their way to make it easy to use and visually appealing as well. The major benefit of Miro Player is that it offers you content feeds for web video. In South Africa we are not quite there in terms of bandwidth costing to allow the full use of this software but the player does play anything you can throw at it. Well it does at least play anything I threw at it so far and it does so beautifully. Its video library feature is frankly cooler than cool.

If you have been looking for a stylin’ video player for your computer I would highly recommend popping over to http://www.getmiro.com to take a look. I am not saying it will get windows users away from the Media Player Classic or VLC but it is a great alternative and it does look great!

Don’t know if you’ve taken a look at XBMC, although it is more for a media centre i.e. if you’re going to use a box exclusively for a media player. I use this sometimes when I know I’m going to have a session only watching series/listening to music.

It is very slick, and soft on the eye, and works like a gem on ubuntu.
