Can I use a Modem/Router or Router from the UK with Telkom ADSL?

Hi

I have access to either Netgear and Belkin (and could purchase cheaply Linksys or even Billion) routers or modem routers sourced in the UK for my forhtcoming stay in South Africa. My residence will have a Telkom (basic package) ADSL broadband setup newly installed. Could I bring one of the UK routers to set up a wireless setup for my laptop that would work with the Telkom supplied modem, or bring a modem/router to work off the adsl socket? Apparently in some coutries the ISP's distribute their broadband signal in a way that restricts third party equipment from using the service. The house currently has a desktop running XP using the broadband. I don't need to setup a network, though printer sharing would be good. My laptop is running Windos 7 home premium. I am staying long enough to make the setup worthwhile (probably leave the basics there for future trips) but the prices of routers in SA are considerably higher than I can get them for here, specially since I have a couple spare already.

Thanks for any advice.

Well depending on what router Telkom gives you it might already have wireless.

What you can do is as follows:

1. Bring your own wireless ADSL router, you "might" need to update firmware on the router to get SA settings, throw the Telkom one out and plug yours in.
2. Bring your own wireless ADSL router, use the telkom one until it dies and then use yours.

If its just wifi/a router, it works fine. I brought a D Link wifi router back which works without any issues. ADSL, not so sure. However, I dont think there would be any major problems since I think both countries use the same standards. Its also unlikely that international companies would even be willing to customize their ADSL kit for the SA market. I mean, power plugs are one thing, but I really dont think they would stand for Telkom not adhering to international standards.

So... you should be fine. Make sure you get hold of a power adapter for whatever you bring back, you can buy them in travel shops.

yeah make sure its adsl router, as you get routers with wan connection that does not take rj11 phone cable.

I have a Netgear 834GT from the UK. It came with the UK style BT phone plug and matching filter. It works peachy fine.

Same here, brought over 2x Netgear DG834GT routers and they both work without issue, although I had to change some settings to make it work with the ADSL over here - just contact your ISP for the settings to use and you'll be fine.

Hi all

Apologies for disapearing, work got in the way.

I am very grateful for all your responses, looks like a safe enough bet to bring a UK phone line style modem / router. I have since learned that the installation by Telkom came with a wifi modem/router so I guess I will do as Snormossel suggests and use that until it dies and then switch to the UK one.

Many thanks for the helpful replies. Now I can look forward to some time working in a sunny climate! Woohoo!
