Ya, I'm sure it gets a bit much - sorry about that. But if Dolby's going to instigate and accuse me of things, I will happily follow along and defend myself.

Maybe they are actually only one person? It certainly livens up debates though.

Now I know what you meant by pseudo. I certainly wouldn't buy something like that although I would need to hear one first. It just doesn't make sense to me. Reeks of gimmick.

You considering something like that as part of your downgrade?

Nah - I agree with you on the gimmicky factor and I prefer real speakers behind me. They do have a more open sound sound that regular 2 ch though - but they're more for convenience. They just sold their older Sony 5.1 ch for this as it's easier to use and some may prefer that. I do feel it's good value for money though.

I wouldn't go for that in my downgrade. I'm looking at these :

    Yamaha RX-V367 (R3,990) (http://www.soundimage.co.za/catalog/...roducts_id=414)
    Yamaha BD-S667 (R3,990) (http://www.soundimage.co.za/catalog/...roducts_id=435)
    B&W MT-25 (R9,990) (http://www.soundimage.co.za/catalog/...products_id=82)

I'm pretty settled on the Yamahas - but the speakers I'm still looking around. I initially looked at these Elac CINEMA 24CM - but the price scared me ... AND I'd still need a subwoofer http://www.elac.com/en/products/micr...m&b=cinemacomp

edit: maybe not. The Pioneer still offers more features, and offers a higher output per channel.

    Who's "they"?

Nice speakers, how much do they go for?

Do you think I would notice a difference if I upgraded my Sony amp to something like those Yamahas or the cheaper Pioneers? Besides HDMI audio. Assuming, hopefully, that the amp is the only real downside of my system (relatively/for now).

Not sure, still undecided as per my edit. May consider forking out a bit more and going for the Pioneer VSX-920: http://www.avshop.co.za/product.php?id_product=48

Oh - sorry ... my parents upgraded their aging PVision LC and Sony 5.1 last week to an LG Infinia 47" LED and this sound bar.

The Elacs are R3,500.00 per speaker - so R17,500.00 for the 5 The Elac subwoofer is just over R6,000.00 too.

I don't think you'd notice more or less, tbh ... your amp isn't bad and it's the features that upgrading will get you. If I remember, the Sony has more grunt the Yamaha too.

To me, looking at the earlier two receivers, I'd pay the extra R1,000.00 for the Yamaha because of the extra HDMI 1.4 ports and 3D ready.

If you up to that receiver, I'd look at the Yamaha 467 for R6,000.00 - but saying that, I haven't compared them on paper. Perhaps wrongly so, I've bypassed Pioneer when amplifier/receiver shopping

EDIT : Also looking at the specs, they're pretty close on power ... and I'd doubt you'd pick up a difference.

Is there a site that shows the specs in a bit more detail than the one you posted?

A quick glimpse shows the Yamaha RXV 467 to be on par with the Pioneers in terms of features and power output, but the additional HDMI 1.4 ports and 3D ready seem to be the clincher. Perhaps it will be that one, will need to read a bit more
