Dashboard for Mecer / Long Cheer U6300 Modem

Hi All

Perhaps if anyone can advise me. I have a Mecer Expression 2010 notebook with built in 3G/HSDPA, obviously Mecer's own brand. I have an MTN sim card in the internal slot, all is working well and it connects. The software (UI) for the device sucks though.

I was wondering is it possible to use the actual MTN software (UI) similair to that of Vodacom's connection client, to rather manage the connection for me instead of the Mecer software with the built in 3G/HSDPA Mecer unit?

Will the MTN software work with another 3G unit that is not its own hardware?

The reason why I want to do this is because currently you can't recharge you MTN airtime/data via eg. online banking, and I read that the MTN software can handle recharges and data bundles for you, because now everytime I have to take the sim out and place it in a cellphone to load airtime and buy data, as you can imagine this it quite annoying.

Yeah even if you could get the MTN software it's pretty horrible. MDMA is definitely the way to go.

MDMA is not working. I tried compatibility mode, run as administrator, etc.

It just keeps on saying "Detecting decive" in the statusbar.

Any suggestions anyone?

Hey ginggs, sorry I only saw your post now.

It's a Mecer Expression 2010 notebook, I specified the parts and they put it together, system model W76x/M77xCUH. The slot where the sim card slots in is on the actual motherboard, but the 3G/HSDPA card is slot into what looks like a mini pci express slot but from what I can tell in Windows under device manager is that the card is on a USB interface. The card is made by Mecer themselves, model Mecer HSUPA U6300. In device manager the modem is displayed with the name "Mobile Connector". They have their own driver which you install along with their own connection manager software (where you send sms etc. - but no USSD option, balance, just sms and to connect to the internet).
This is the actual line for the card on the invoice: U6300 PCIe 3.75G HSUPA 7.2Mbps NOTEBOOK MODULE.

I don't think Mecer make anything themselves, except maybe for badges and stickers.

The actual card looks different than the one in the link. The card has Mecer's name on it along with the model, serial and IMEI numbers on a 2x2cm sticker that's fastened on top of one of the larger ICs. It also only works on Windows 7 - it was one of the challenges when I tried downgrading to XP. The software manager is also designed by Mecer.

If you can't get it working for this weird card of theirs don't worry, I'll ask them to load airtime on behalf of me each month and use this direct without a data bundle.

Thanks for the link. I downloaded the driver and had a look in the .inf file. The USB vendor ID is 1C9E, so it definitely is a Long Cheer device.

It will be very difficult for me to add support for your modem without actually seeing one, but you should be able to get the COM port number from device manager and specify it on the MDMA command line. You can also try the various command set options (Huawei, Sierra Wireless, etc.) you may be lucky and your modem understands one of them.

My apologies, as usual Mecer is only re branding their stuff.

I tried the command line com port route along with specifying the command set. MDMA then starts, detects the signal, carrier, etc. When I enter a USSD code, it says session active
but no feedback is returned, I also tried sending a call me via USSD to one of my other MTN phones, the USSD is not executed on the network with any of the command sets.

It's understandable, thanks again for your time and efforts. I'll just ask them to preload a data bundle for me every now and then, I'll probably get another 3g card that has better support.

The problem is that the dashboard software is in chinese, it shows signal on the dashboard but when I try to connect using a dial up it does not want to connect.

If anyone has ideas on a generic dashboard or firmware that I can install please help.

You can try MDMA, it probably won't automatically detect your modem, but you can specify the COM port (of the diagnostic or UI channel, not the dial-up modem) to use on the command line.

Check in the Device Manager for the USB Vendor ID and Product ID (two four digit hexadecimal codes), this might help identify the modem.
