Thread: Virgin Fast internet since Friday (Cape Town)

Default Virgin Fast internet since Friday (Cape Town)

Well, on Friday 11/2, I noticed an "H" on my phone's internet status, as opposed to the usual "E".
Suspecting that that meant HSDPA / HSUPA (or something), I tested with a Youtube video - fast. Very fast.
Even better, it stayed fast over the weekend, although I'm back to "E" this morning.

Anybody know anything about this? Is it a testing thing, or have we been "unofficially" turned up to Cell C speeds?
Or are we about to be?
(BTW, areas where I had it: - Muizenburg, Town central, Mowbray, Claremont)

Had the same experience in Florida/Florida Hills in Roodepoort, Gauteng. Did a speedtest yesterday (13/2/11) and had the following: 2679 Kbps Upload, 1697 Kbps Download. Back at work in Sandton - almost opposite the Virgin Mobile HQ and back to Edge :-(.

I'm still on "H", think HSPA. In Cape Town, Woodstock area. Had no switching back to Edge, altough I did notice it switch to "3G" a couple of times for a split second when I was browsing. Get about 2mbps average on speedtest.

If CellC has 3G coverage in that area then Virgin will do too. Check on CellC's website for coverage

how so? We're getting Cell C speeds (as Virgin piggy-backs on their network), and I pay R1 / minute for most calls, as most close friends and family are also on Virgin. Add in free SMS and the only place I'm missing out is mobile broadband bundles, where Cell C is slightly cheaper, but I still use my phone mostly for voice, where R1/min is by far the best price in SA, hence me still being on Virgin. (if you work out how much you're actually paying for "free" minutes on the various contracts, they're all way over this price. I know, I used to have a talk 500 from Vodascum)
I'll probably switch to Cell C when they eventually match Virgin's voice pricing, but for now, I've got a sweet deal, for MY needs.
