    Why BlackBerry rules in SA

BlackBerry is aggressively growing its smartphone market share in South Africa and has a winning formula, says Arthur Goldstuck

Mainly due to highest internet charges, highest rate of mobile, highest rate of MMS in the world,Blackberry at least can save some with its BBM and free internet!

I got a BB Bold. Yes there are better phones. Does it fill-full my requirements for a phone? Yes! Did it bring down my phone bill? yes by 50%.

It rules because of BIS, not because of the device. If other manufacturers start setting up similar portals, then Blackberries are done for, both here and everywhere else.

BBM is growing because of BIS, not in spite of it, because it's nothing that we haven't seen before.

Blackberry is popular because of BIS (unlimited on-device browsing and emails). No other reason. Their phones are poor and overpriced.

How does Goldstuck think BB phones are within reach of the prepaid market. R2k for the piece of junk 8520 curve? Are they for real?

My wife and kids all have - and swear by - their BlackBerries.
I used to have one long ago. Then I saw the light

I think BBM is actually a bigger selling point for BB than BIS. So many people I know either switched to BB recently or are planning to do so soon, and the biggest reason, I think, is unlimited communication via BBM.

Thats what it comes down to. With all the stupidly high increases of everything (food, elect, tolls) we need cheaper options for smart phones. Do you really need a touch screen to do a facebook update?
Also with the emergence of the tablets a big question must be on the smartphone applications. Why bother with cellphone apps and touch screens when the tablet is "the best experience", just get a phone that will get you by [which the blackberry does very well] and invest in the tablet.

i just cant get past how horrible and overpriced bb hardware is, R2000 for a bona fide POS like the curve is absolutely ridiculous, you can get the awesome little (android) se x10 mini for R1599 at CNA/Edgars for example, bis/bbm is the only thing bb has going for it, and the abundance of sheeple of course.

If Blackberry didn't have BIS I doubt if it would have .4% market share.

Anyone who pays R2000 for a 8520 has money to blow with very little research you can get the 8520 for as low as R1500 cash. A BB Bold 9700 brand new i've seen for R2500.
