Hi guys

I have a headache now from so much searching for solutions to my problems but can't really find anything, so hopefully you guys can help me! I've tried searching previous posts to try and find a solution but wasn't very successful, so i apologise if you've answered this question many times already!

My internet loses connection way too often and it is very very frustrating! These past 3 months I thought the cause was because of terrible static line noise on my home telephone. Telkom finally found the problem and now there is no line noise, they said that should fix my internet problems too. It didn't. It still keeps disconnecting at random intervals. The weather is perfect here in pretoria today, no rain, so I don't think it's weather related.

The DSL led will just start blinking, proceeded by the Internet led switching off and then they'll be off. Then it will try connect various times and sometimes it will come back on straight away, other times it will not connect for a good 1 or 2 hours atleast!

Could it be my router? I currently have Telkom's Mega 105WR. Is it a rubbish router?
I don't mind buying a new one, but i don't want to buy a new to only have the same problems. If it is the router, why does this happen?

My ISP is Mweb and I'm using the 4MB line. Here are my modem stats. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

DS Margin 4

there is your problem, your snr is way to low for dsl modem to keep sync .

try a newer router to get better snr .

Mega 105WR is pretty crap, mine gets about 11snr on 4mb. ( replaced it)

Replace your router with

http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=1_55_57&products_id=383

You should notice improvements on your line quality and stats

If it doesnt completely fix it theres something else wrong on line causing low DS Margin and High DS Atten.

But replacing router will be good thing to do anyway

Also
CRC Rx Fast 18654
CRC Tx Fast 33

means it gives errors a lot when you receiving data and only 33 for sending data

My son had the same problem also with a telkom router
Changed over to a billion router no more problems

i'd guess the router isn't the only problem. an electric fence, home alarm, even a faulty fax can be the cause behind such a low margin too. ideally you'd want it no lower than 12db for a stable 4meg sync and i'm not sure if a better ADSL router would raise it that much

Thanks a lot for the answers! I will try and see if there could be something interfering with the line first. The telephone line runs right next to the electric fence power box. Do you think that could cause interference? Or is it only when the telephone line runs too close to the actual electric fence?

Honestly... i dunno :) just read here sometime ago that they give problems

I'll also vouch for the router & modem that Merenwenrago suggested.

You can get it for slightly cheaper from Uniterm Direct via BoB, instead of buying off Uniterm Direct's website: http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/24201854/TP_Link_W8960N_300Mbps_Wireless_N_ADSL2_Router.html @ R569

If you're satisfied with your current WiFi AP, then you can always just buy a D-Link DSL-2500U ADSL modem and chain it with your current WiFi AP, since this modem costs less than R200.

By the way, how are my stats? I never know what to amake of those numbers. Should I go and get me a new router as well or will my duoPlus 300WR still do? My connection is very bumpy, lots of spikes and sometimes disconnects ... but the DSL and Internet lights are still stable or flashing.

HermanTheGerman: I'm quite surprised to see that you can sync at 5Mbps on G.Dmt modulation and not ADSL2+ modulation.

Your SNR margins are pretty good - nothing to worry about.

I was using an old Netgear router, the DG series, and having the same problem as Sisqu so I purchased the router that Merenwenrago recommended on Tuesday. I received it today and just finished installing it. So far the internet is significantly faster on my 10MB(up too) Cybersmart connection. I think my router has been throttling my connection for months it seems.

The real test should be tonight which is when I continuously lost my connection. I will post an update to let you know all is well.

also check router support half bridge mode, aka you have an account on the router and can you can dail one also :)

would be great buy then!!

Eish. Excuse me but me dunno what G.Dmt is. I swear I didn't fiddle with any settings, it was the Telkom techie. You think it's gonna be better if I toggle ADSL2+? And how to do it?

somewhere on modem is modulation , probably at adsl setup window , or wan setup.

should be options like adsl and adsl 2+ etc.

what Pada was touching on i think was; surprising, because the rumor's going around that your exchange/DSLAM has to support .plus2 modulation in order for you to sync any faster than 4 megabit

Lost connection again last night, although only briefly.

My new stats with the TD-W8960N

Line Coding(Trellis): On On
SNR Margin (0.1 dB): 68 120
Attenuation (0.1 dB): 580 280
Output Power (0.1 dBm): 173 89
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 1728 888

The only thing that means anything to me there is the Attainable rate, which still looks terrible to me for my supposed 4096 line.

Perhaps I should call in a tech to look at the physical connection in the wall?
