Thread: iBurst Signal Strength in Sunninghill / Sunninghill Gardens

Smile iBurst Signal Strength in Sunninghill / Sunninghill Gardens

    Hi

I live in Sunninghill Gardens and was wondering if anyone could tell me what signal strength they receive from iBurst in this area and possibly what average throughput speeds they get. I'm looking into acquring iBurst (after Telkom said there are no more ports available on the exchange and that I would have to wait indefinitely until they upgrade for HomeDSL384!) so if anyone could tell me what the connectivity is like it would be helpful.

I've looked at the coverage map on the iBurst website and Sunninghill looks okay, though I would much rather get someone's opinion from the area before I signup. I'm going to make use of http/ftp protocols mostly.

    Thanks in advance.

PS. I read on their site that:-

"As a result the iBurst network is able to provide data rates of up to 1 Mbps to each user with a maximum base station capacity of 20 Mbps"

It stands to reason that if the base station is oversubscribed then the data rate could drop.. I guess DSL scores in this area in that you are guaranteed a specific connection speed to the exchange at least. Does anyone know of base stations that are already at capacity or not?

You should contact a reseller, most will come to your premises and give you a live demonstration of signal strength & speed.
As to your second question, just read the many threads about Northcliff tower. Pain in the ass, however, your assumption that you are guaranteed a certain speed on ADSL is misplaced. Apart from Telkoms wonderful "Best effort", exchanges have limited backhaul bandwidth, though it should be much larger than 20mbs.

    Cheers

It basically sucks in this area.
UTD : full signal 100 % of the time , MTU 1352 , RWIN 255520 -external aerial makes a huge difference

    Default Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion. A reseller saw my post and kindly offered to come out and do a test. (Peter from Gigalink). Anyway, I'm gonna take him up on the offer. Hopefully it will go well and I'll be able to signup for broadband internet access at last!
