Thread: Sony Bravia USB Port on LCD Cannot Read External Hard Drive. Help

Default Sony Bravia USB Port on LCD Cannot Read External Hard Drive. Help

    Hi

i noticed on my Sony Bravia 46EX500 (and a few other make LCD tv's / Plasmas) when i plug in my NTFS External Drive it does not pick up the 1TB Drive.

It works fin on Laptop / Pc.

    1. Does the USB Port only Read FAT32 ?

    2. Which Application can i use to Format the entire 1TB partition to FAT32?

    3. Can i create 2 Partions and just make 1 Partition 2GB and format that as FAT32 and the 2nd Partition as NTFS ?

    4. Will a FAT32 1TB External Drive work on the USB Port on DSTV PVR2 Decoder?

    5. Will a FAT32 1TB External Drive work on the USB Port on a DVD Player?

    thanks for all the help.
    Much appreciated.

    Hi

    Correct forum - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/forumdis...and-Multimedia

Yes it's a file system problem and must be FAT32. Not sure about mixing FAT32 and NTFS on one drive, but you should be able to use Windows Disk Management to do everything. Can be found in Start > right click Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management.

Many TV's or DVD players cannot use an extern HDD, only usb flash sticks. Only way to be sure is to read the manual or try for yourself.

    1. Yes
    2. Windows, Linux, OS X should all be able to format a drive to FAT32
    3. Yes
    4. No, not as far as I'm aware but I could be wrong.

Yip, must be FAT32. And to make things a little harder, not all file types are supported. I tried setting my dads system up and some AVI's worked, some didn't. Eventually connected my laptop via HDMI. So much easier.

Samsung's don't do NTFS IIRC. Although they do do .mkv... But if the file limitation is 4GB for FAT32, I don't see much of a point to be honest, since most HD movies are bigger than 4GB. I know there are ways to get files >4GB onto FAT32 drives, would they then be viewable? Hmmm.

Awesome. Good to know. I was confused as it seems some guys in the TV forum can only use FAT32? Perhaps difference of firmware? I'm pretty sure the 5 Series LCD's and up, and C450 plasma's and up have the same USB media players.

Windows 7 won't let you format a large partition with FAT32 (using the native Windows tools.) This will do it for you.

The Samsung LED 5/6 have video support with MKV. It reads off NTFS drives as well.

You can confirm this on the Samsung website.

As for converting your drives to FAT32 the best tool for the job is swissknife (Google it) I dont think its advisable to make one partition FAT and the other NTFS.
