I am not sure how people are able to run a 9kg cylinder for 3-4 weeks. I bought a DeLonghi and a Goldair and both use about 150-200g/hour which works out 50-70 hours per cylinder. The Goldair (going for R599 at Builders) has really inferior build-quality when it comes to the heating knobs. Nonetheless both heat very well. Last year I paid in excess of 2-3k p.m. during winter using underfloor heating, so I would think that gas will be substantially cheaper.

I have given up on gas, the costs are in my opinion are way to high.

I have even been shopping around for a aircon that also heats. The electricity works out cheaper than that of gas.

I've just started using a gas heater for the first time, and while it heats fine there is a constant lingering smell of gas on the edges of the room (note- NOT anywhere near the heater, or around the valves) - is this normal?

Yes. But do make sure your gas cannister hasn't been loosened too much.

Apparently a bowl of water in front of the heater on the floor reduces the gas smell.

I bought a Goldair at Makro last weekend. The control knobs were broken so I returned it and got my money back.

Then bought the same heater at Builders Warehouse - except this one didn't work (the flame wouldn't stay on when you release the knob).

The shocking thing is that I literally had to "assemble" #2 above myself since most of the screws were only fastened halfway (and therefore VERY flimsy).

Furthermore, while looking into its innards from below (to try and find the problem), I noticed the same around the gas burners: half-loose screws. In some places there's even an obvious gap where the burner's back cover doesn't seal properly.

Needless to say, I didn't feel safe with that thing anywhere near me, and I won't be buying another Goldair / Alva or anything that appears to be made in the same cheapie factory.

(Mine had a date-stamp of 1 June 2011, so it does appear to be manufactured locally...)

I went and bought a Safeway (Alva) at that place on Victoria Rd. paid R599 for it brand new. He says they all made at the same factory. The Safeway is the exact same model as the Russel Hobbs, SGH305 i think. The other brands like Goldair, Salton and Logik are inferior parts assembled. they all work, but the brand names lasts longer.

Amalgamted Appliances makes all of these and they just white label the products. Contrary to belief there is zero difference in the quality of components used by this factory for the various models. Actually I've seen my over priced (crap) Russel Hobbs kettle been sold for a 3rd under a different brand - same kettle.

This is why consumers complain about Russel Hobbs as its just a Salton why a RH sticker on it

Mine lasts a full month cause I only open the valve enough to heat the 3 bars.I then reduce it to one bar when the room is sufficiently warm.I then close the valve futher just enough to keep the single bar burning.
Its also safer that way.

I only use Delonghi (all heaters)ever since a Goldair oil heater caught fire.A 9kg gas bottle lasts 10 days normaly.My 2 Delonghi gas heaters both have automatic thermostat controls.You get what you pay for.
