Thread: New Samsung TVs ("D" series)

I originally went shopping for a 32" LCD (LA32C530), then I came across this forum and Im glad I did. It took me 4 months, but I ended up buying the new Samsung PS43D490 - what a TV!!!! The size is clearly what I needed (not 32...) and so far the picture is awesome. I have not hooked up the DSTV yet, I have only played some movies off the HDD. I need to find a HD movie to test, but the .avi and .mkv files have been great. Smooth motion and good blacks.
Anyone have a sample HD trailer or something I can use to test?

And to think there's a certain member or two here that say they would never touch 4 Series plasma!

All I want is my 46D7000
I wish I knew if there were going to be specials in the near future though. I'm holding out for X-mas in hopes of a good deal....

Postman, I don't suppose you can help with my 3D questions this thread?

Not entirely sure. Sounds right though. I mean if a 3D capable 100Hz PC LCD can give you 3D, then I don't see why a 3D capable LCD RV/plasma wouldn't work...

Eish I guess you could download a short 720p/1080p HD clip from YouTube.

Thanks for the answer, but this is my only real concern. No one (Govan Mani, Kay Makan, Makro, Dion Wired, Samsung Rep) seems to be able to tell me for sure. I suppose at worst I'll need to purchase the ATI/Nvidia middleware for optimum results, but was hoping to know beforehand....

    Thanks again though.

Hi Guys, little feedback on the 51D550 which might help if someone else is looking to buy it.
Firstly to that guy who asked about the price. I got it from Hirsch Meadowdale. "Original" price was somewhere around 11500 but almost instantly they dropped the price to 10700 which i was happy with and decided to buy it. I suggest you give them a try.
The box arrived on saturday morning without problems but i did not have any HDMI cables and i was busy parting that is why manage to setup the box on sunday late afternoon. At the moment I'm still busy "breaking in" the TV that is why i wan't be able to tell much about the PQ but once i'm done with that will post again what i think and my settings. So far did not have any buzzing, floating black or brightness pops and the panel seems to behave nicely. Saw a lot of people on the forums complaining about that and will keep close eye on this. Watched few Blu-rays (Elisabeth: Golden Age watched it specifically because of the colorful dresses, 12 Monkeys, War of the Worlds) movies and FullHD rips and must say colors and PQ looks much better then my old Panasonic 852x480 but that is to be expected. Regarding the built in media player works fine, but did not play quite a lot of my FullHD rips (Star Wars, King Kong, Pirates of the Caribbean) which are fine on WD Media Player. Hope they will improve that with next firmware upgrades. Now the bad! The glare on this screen is really bad. Comparing to a 6 years old Panasonic the glare is much, much worst. On sunday late afternoon when i was busy with the set was almost impossible to see anything and had to pull one of my curtains in the lounge. The lounge is facing north and at that time of the day there is a sun in it, but with Pana i never had problem like that. It is not a big problem for me because i like to enjoy my movies in the dark, but defo was frustrating to find out how bad the glare and reflection is. As conclusion i would like to say that after those two days of tests the TV looks quite promising. It has problems but I think it will be much better after a proper calibration and maybe one or two firmware upgrades. I wouldn't say that is better then Panasonic GT30 but it is much cheaper and probably i will keep it.

Just one quick question. Which would be better suited for SD viewing, DSTV HD and some movie downloads (very little full HD and no bluray),the PS51D450 or the PS51D550?

PS51D450. Lower resolution handles lower quality content better.
