I did my National Service in 1987/8 and was called up for camps, but managed to get it deferred as I was working for myself at the time and after a couple of years the papers stopped coming. It did stuff up my career I was doing at the time for the reason I was away doing my 2 years when the industry I went into was going through transformation and if you had not had performed, you did not get the licences. Long story, but we all were affected it seems, but none more like my brother.
Just felt so sorry for my brother who was older than myself and went to the army straight after school around 1976. I studied further after School so my call up only started in 1987, funnily enough at the peak of the border war, but also near its end.
After 2 years of National Service and 10 or 12 (cannot remember now) of camps they did not even give my brother a stripe. I suppose they needed someone (troepies) to do their dirty work for them.
Sorry for detracting off topic a bit, but I just want to recall one experience I had when doing my two years.
The latter part of the two years I did at Youngsfield and what got my goat was the unnecessary call up of citizen force members over the December period to come and do guard duty at the camp so that the permanent force members could enjoy their Christmas holidays.
In actual fact this was illegal from what I understand, as a certain quantity of members had to be on duty all year round and the PF members were supposed to take their leave in a staggered fashion and not all at once to balance the numbers.
It was for this reason I lost a lot of respect for the PF members, dragging citizen force members away from their Christmas to increase the unit strength so they could have a nice Christmas holiday, when it was their career and they should be doing it actually.
Oh well, all in the past now.
