Different strokes I guess. The length may put some off, but for those who are fascinated by the world created by Tolkien (like me), it's really not an issue. The directors cut for Return of the King is over 4 hours long, and it didn't phase me at all.

Not talking about the length so much... the first one was good. But the second and third I felt had a distinct lack of focus, particularly in the battle scenes which let's face it constituted pretty much 90% of the screen time of those movies. He sacrificed pacing for pedantic faithfulness to the books, which themselves could have done with a bit of ruthless editing along the fuzzy edges.

haha, I love it when people think they are expert critics on one of the most popular and well loved books/movies of all time!
It's as if you are too cool to actually appreciate what 90% of the rest of the world loves!
Sorry dude, we'll try harder to cater to your obscure tastes next time!

mind you, i made out to each of the movies the entire movie when i went to watch them. now the Dark Knight ... that was pretty much me shoving the girl off of me to get me some screen time.

    Girl: "Kiss me."
Me: "Shhh, Heath Ledger is on the screen, no talkey."

I'm not an expert anything, I just have an opinion and I can defend it. My tastes are also fairly plebeian - I'm no Peterch . It's simple enough - I just got very bored, especially at the 2:30 mark of the final movie (something ring of something iirc) by Elijah Wood's expression of noble constipation @ insurmountable task of chucking ring in lava vs. cacophonous battle scenes between indistinguishable hordes, followed by another hour of 'finally it's the end...no wait it isn't.'

There was one really memorable character in the whole lot, and he was CGI animated. but otherwise dwarfs were dwarfs, wizards were wizards, and burning disembodied eyes were burning disembodied eyes.

I actually rather enjoyed the chemistry between Gimli/Legolas and Gandalf/Pippin/Merry throughout the 3 movies.

I can agree with you about Frodo however, didn't quite enjoy his character as much as the others. Sam was much better IMO.

Yep, but I do think Martin Freeman is an excellent choice for Bilbo for the new movie.

As far as the first three movies go, I really thought The Two Towers was the best of them. Also, when I went to watch The Fellowship of the Ring, it was one of the only times in my life I've been in a cinema where people actually applauded. That said, I can't wait for An Unexpected Journey, not only 'cos I loved the book but, for me at least, this one has Cate Blanchett AND Evangeline Lily.

You're a very droll character. Sombody that would fit in quite well with the cast of LotR.
