Jackson is campaigning to extend the two movies to a trilogy, given how much money LOTR made and that much of the preparation work is done, he may well succeed.

I really should take a drive down to the shire and visit hobbiton. My spawn will love it.

But what will the third movie be about. The the LotR story is done, the Hobbit has been completed within the 2 movies. What else did Tolkien write about Middle Earth?

they might consider re-editing it so the complete story gets spread out over 3 movies and not 2.Jackson probably has about 7 hours of footage. All he has to do is shoot an additional 2 hours and split it into 3 x 3 hour movies.
There are only 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Ja, this is how I think they will do it. Knowing Peter Jackson, he has already shot way too much footage for two movies, so he will just split them and shorten the other two movies.
He would not have to shoot much more at all.
Remember how much additional material they inserted into the extended versions of LoTR.

How 'bout the entire mythology? Personally, "The Silmarillion" is my favorite Tolkien book but there is also "The Children of Hurin" and "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil".

Yes, there is an awful lot of canon to draw on... this is one of the most fully realised and fleshed out mythologies in all of literature.

Uhm ... David Eddings (The Belgariad + The Malloreon + The prequel and companion novels) do come close though ... regarding this genre ... although Eddings, himself admittedly, did draw inspiration from Tolkien.

That's why I said "one of the most..."

There are a few other fantasy series that do come close.
    Stephen Donaldson (Thomas Covenant)
George R.R. Martin (Fire and Ice)
    Roger Zelazny (Amber)
    Robert Jordan (WoT)
    Terry Pratchett (Discworld)
    Raymond E. Feist (Riftwar)...
    etc.
