Digital dividend spectrum advice to ICASA

“Find out what’s being used, before we lose it,” ISPA tells ICASA and the Department of Communications

It became clear at the Workshop that the incumbent operators wish to perpetuate existing licensing patterns and for the 2,6GHz auction to be further delayed so as to allow them to bid for licences in both that band and the digital dividend band.
But just last week Peter Uys was singing a different tune...
Uys said that spectrum is a valuable resource in ensuring that network operators have the needed tools to increase capacity and lower prices. ICASA has been dragging its feet in allocating 2.6GHz spectrum, which is particularly suitable for rolling out LTE and WiMax networks.

The regulator is essentially holding back operators such as Vodacom and MTN from investing in LTE network, and the Vodacom CEO made it clear that they have the money, resources and will power to roll out an LTE network if they get access to this spectrum.

Why do you intentionally remove half of the quote from the article to convey a different perspective?

    Hi morkhans

Yip. At the DD workshop Voda, MTN and Cell C were very clear: we want the 2.6GHz auction to be delayed until the DD becomes available. I will make the presentations available when i have some time. Seems that the tune has changed a little...
