Default Kirsten in, Smith to resign [Opinion piece]

New broom sweeps clean!!! I do hope that this is true.

Johannesburg – Gary Kirsten is set to be appointed the new Proteas coach and Graeme Smith will in all likelihood resign on Sunday as Test captain of the national cricket team.

Russell Domingo will be Kirsten’s assistant and Allan Donald will take over as the new bowling coach.

These shock announcements are set to be announced when the Executive Council of Cricket South Africa (CSA) start with a “house-cleaning exercise” on Monday.

Although the CSA Board must still approve the appointments, Sport24 has learned from reliable sources that Kirsten will succeed Corrie van Zyl after South Africa’s disastrous World Cup campaign.

Kirsten, a former Proteas opening batsman, led India to glory in the World Cup a couple of months ago.

Smith will apparently resign on Sunday as Test captain. He has in recent times also resigned as one-day and Twenty20 captain.

It is being speculated that AB de Villiers will be the new captain.

    Donald to continue NZ role
    2011-06-03 10:09

Cape Town and Bloemfontein - Former Proteas fast bowler, Allan Donald, is in possession of a brand new contract from New Zealand Cricket.

Donald is busy reviewing its details, but it seems a mere formality that he will continue as the Kiwi's bowling coach, a role he performed during the recent Cricket World Cup in India.

Donald, applied for, but failed to secure the Australian bowling coach job last month, with Cricket Australia (CA) opting for Craig McDermott instead.

Donald's first task will be to assist New Zealand’s young stars in the annual tournament for emerging players in Brisbane in July.

Thrilled with gaza as coach, not that it was that big secret. The moment it was confirmed he went for an interview it was pretty much game set and match. Would prefer amla as the new captain but ab is still a better choice then botha imho.

iirc Hashim does not want the captaincy (yet!).

If AB is skipper then I say that he should keep wicket in all forms of the game (and be skipper in all forms as well).

Test cricket is too hard to have him keep, bat in the top 5 and captain imho. I would only use him as keeper in the shorter formats. In test cricket boucher is still good enough so no need to tinker with it yet.

I say bring in a new keeper for all three formats of the game and let AB concentrate on his batting and captaincy.Boucher is getting on a bit so we need fresh blood in the tests.
    Any contenders?
