Have you been Rica-ed without Rica-ing?

Cellphone operators say it is impossible.

Well I been Rica-ed without Rica-ing.

I dont know where they come with this line "but if you started your contract or activated a pre-paid account any time since July 2009 you Rica-ed as part of that set-up process", because im on prepaid. Ive had it for more than my son was born.
His now seven.
And I can tell you this much, I havent done any submitting of forms, or calling any call centre (all though they have been calling me), or anything. But as said, I been Rica-ed without Rica-ing.

Surely you bought another physical phone in those 7 years and had to give information (you still take a new simcard, even if you continue to use your old one - or can you now buy phones completely unbundled without a sim card).
When I bought my CellC prepaid 2gb bundle they were all over me like a bad rash to rica the sim in there.
Same thing when i got my previous phone from Vodacom.

But his NEW sim card and number would get RICAd in your scenario, not his current SIM. You have to RICA every SIM card, not every person...

RICA is a FARCE

The "Boytjie" who works with us needed a SIM card - When I stopped at the post office, to check our P.O.Boxes for mail, there was one of these little MTN trolleys standing on the corner, by the robot. I go check the mail boxes, and "Boytjie" makes a bee line to the trolley. When I get back, he has a shiny new MTN SIM card, activated, and RICA'ed without him producing any documentation, he verbally provided the requested information.

So what is the point of RICA, or is it just us more affleunt types who need to produce documentatation to prove where our place of residence is ...

If you got RICA'ed somehow - be thankfull that someone relieved you of the onerous task, and hopefully provided incorrect data, to protect you and your right to privacy, that RICA invades.

You only RICA a number, not a sim card.

EDIT: nvm you only dont have to rica when you do a sim swop on a contract.

When I upgraded my vodacom contract the courier who delivered the new phone took a copy of my proof of address and the next day or so I was RICA'd.
With MTN I only took a new contract after RICA started, and provided proof for FICA purposes, yet I am not RICA'd...

What bull****, I know people who have been RICA'd without having to hand in a shred of documentation. There are absolutely no checks and balances in place to ensure that this doesn't happen within their systems (at least in Vodacom's case), and quite frankly I can't see how, if documentation WAS provided, they would be able to ensure it isn't fraudulent in the first place.

What I find highly annoying is my mom RICA'ing immediately when they came out with this bull****, then end of last year convinced her to take a prepaid contract that loads R50 a month on her cellphone and now demands she RICA's again.

WTF is the point of RICA if you have to keep RICA'ing the same ****ing number over and over again if you take out a new contract (that has your home address/id number already)

Exactly, except my mom was RICA'ed before the new "contract". They don't know WTF is going on dude, I'm sure of it.

RICA is supposedly here to prevent crime. What do you think a criminal will do if he needs to make a call now that he can't just buy an anonymous SIM anymore hmm? Thanks to RICA we will see an increased rate of cell phone theft and fraud. And everybody trusts the government to keep our personal details safe and not abuse the information, right?

Yes, RICA is a farce and an utter waste of time, but I don't see what the big deal here is.

If you have been told that you have been RICA'd and you can't remember doing it, then simply take your ID and proof of residence and go to a Vodacom shop and compare the details they have on hand with what you know to be accurate. Either they will have the correct details (which means you must have provided them at some stage), or the details will be incorrect (in which case you will correct them). Problem solved. No more whining or crying is necessary. Seriously, this is not the end of the world. Just get off your butt and do it.

I have also been RICA'd without providing any details to Vodacom. I've had my prepaid sim card for over 3 years, well before RICA was required and I have never given my details to Vodacom.

Does Vodacom think people are stupid? How can you "forget" that you RICA'd? What a bunch of liars.

To be fair, half of everybody in the country have an IQ below average. So yes, there's a lot of stupid people around...

And that does not exclude those who wasted tax payers money dreaming up RICA ... , namely, our LAME, LAZY and INCOMPETENT law enforcement contingent ...

How much are they paying you?

I've been getting a number of people the last couple of weeks saying 'but it can't be'. With contract customers its very easy for shops to help the customer in the right direction, but not with prepaid. We have no link on the system that provides us with the customers name, id number or address when its prepaid. So go to a shop and find out if its your ID linked to your number.
