Thread: Openweb Uncapped Gold Backbones

  1. #1

    Default Openweb Uncapped Gold Backbones

I received my Uncapped Gold today and must say im really looking forward to using it tonight.

One thing that really interests me about the accounts are the different backbones.
When i told MrBeep that i use it mostly for gaming he recommended vb
    Afaik the backbones are :
    IS - Best for torrents
    VB - Best for gaming?
    Altech - Best for?
    BCS?

Does anyone have any feedback regarding the pros and cons of the backbones?
I would also imagine it could make a difference based on where you are situated.

Altech is awesome for everything eexcept torrents and nntp.

Only heard bad things about BCS.

Think you also get Nology backbone.

VB is also great for NNTP

I started out on vb - it was good for about a day. Had a horrible time gaming or doing much else. Keoma said that it was an anomaly. He put me on Altech, which was brilliant, but I requested to be moved to IS so I could get local nntp working. (NNTP will work on altech, but you'll need a paid account on one of the international news server providers)

My new gold user-name ends with @vb.co.za

Last month I was on IS (not a gold account ) it worked well for torrents and emule.

Any feed back if I should ask to be moved off VB seeing as that should be more for the gamers ? or just try the new log on ?

How bad is it for news server and torrents, is it back all day or just working hours?

OOooh... I am an OpenWeb newbie too. Today is my 1st day with them...

Can anyone perhaps provide a linky or quick run-down of this "backbone" thing. It would be very much appreciated by myself... and as the OP has said, I too would like to know more about this from them-what-knows.

    Ta and thanks too.

I think all these backbones are pretty good, some are just more suited to certain things than others.
Would be great if MrBeep could actually give a rundown of what he considers the strong points of each one.

Also i must be honest, i am reading between the lines when i say VB is best for gaming. I told MrBeep that i game and he said he would take it into consideration. My account came and it is VB, so i assume he took it into consideration

During my short stint on the Altech backbone, all NNTP was blocked completely. It was great for the first few hours and then suddenly it just died, couldn't even access the Astraweb website. So Altech no good for NNTP in my books.

I have no problem with gaming/WoW on IS and torrents work well on weekends/afterhours on it too! ^.^

    Quick Question...

Does the user login identify the backbone... like mine xxxxx@xxx-bcsnet ?

Which backbone is the one most preferred / recommended by the OpenWeb Goldies ? Any input will be most appreciated...

I've been using Openweb Gold 4Mb/s for about 6 months now, I've tried every backbone and the best for me personally is Altech, because I always get full line speed and don't torrent at home.

If you use torrents, move back to IS - its dead on VB... if you use newsgroups...stay on VB.

First day on Openweb Gold. I got a VB login. So far not perfect, but not bad either. The main uses for my family are: Gaming (WoW), Skype, Email, SSH, HTTP and NNTP. Very seldom use torrents.

Would also like to see some kind of table giving the strengths and weaknesses of the available backbones.
