Hello for 8ta users!
Can anybody (inc. 8ta) explain plz, what are these "roaming/nonroaming" games mean? My friend wanna test 8ta voice service, but asked me why MTN mentioned here at all. Do he need to pay more? Different signal strength? Whatever...
Thanks!
8ta have signed a roaming agreement with MTN for 2G services only, until such time as they have their own network up and running (towers on air).
At this stage 8ta have around 1100 of their own towers on air and only offer 3G services on these 1100 towers.
If you use a "normal" 8ta sim card and attempt to access the Web, it will hunt for the strongest signal off any tower and more than likely find a MTN tower and make an EDGE connection.
If you use a "normal" 8ta prepaid sim card that has been made "non-roaming" as per this thread, then it will only search for 8ta's own towers and attempt a 3G connection.

@OMB, thanks for short answer! @MickeyD, thanks for long answer! As I understood, people who use 8ta SIM for Internet have to make special request to be on 8ta's 3G network. Does it affect 10Gb promo also?
Hi there 8ta,
I've just forwarded an email requesting for my number to be made able to connect to the 8ta network.
My question is; if I do not have coverage in my area for the Internet 5 Promotion (as per promo map), will I be able to roam on the MTN towers for 3G still or is the 8ta network the only network for the 10 and 20GB promotion, which I would like to take up.
I currently have great signal from MTN (3/5 bars and upto 3.1mbps download) using my 8ta prepaid sim.
I have the 10 gig contract, but now, im not reaching the speeds i hoped for on my 7.2 dongle.
My question is, and im pretty new to this, what does a non-roaming sim do? i have an idea that it would use 8ta towers, not mtn and whoever, but would i then get my promised speeds? isnt it using a other tower cos an 8ta tower is out of range so it makes do with the best one around?
Should i do they whole non-roaming thing or leave it as is?
Thanks.
all the footsteps that were beside mine have gone their separate ways.
As far as i understand, if you are on the 10GB contract, you are already on non-roaming. You only need to do this if you are on prepaid and want to test the 8ta network.
