Viber for Android finally launched(like Whatsapp for Voice)

Viber, a popular VOIP application for IPhone has finally been released for Android.

A quick run down. The app works on push technology and essentially sits idle(like whatsapp), when a call is requested the app opens and connects the call. The idle data usage of Skype was one of the reasons I didn't leave it running on my phone.

According to their website a call will consume approximately 256k per minute so even taking into account our ridiculous R2/MB OOB rate here it works out to 50c per minute.

Another advantage it has over Skype is that is scans your contacts and automatically adds anybody who uses Viber to your list so you don't have to manually add people into your Viber contact list.

Is this available for Blackberry also so I can recommend it to my friends and family that has Blackberries?

Sorry OC, it only supports Android and Iphone. And the Android one is still in Beta.

Perhaps you can recommend that your friends and family get smartphones?

lol haha. My mom watched me and my Defy and said that she does not want a phone like this on her property...not even as a hand me down. It scared her! hahaha. I think the main thing that gave her a hol kramp was the touch screen though. We tested it and the screen does not respond to her long nails hehe.

I did a google search and saw a line of text in the google search result saying that a Blackberry version is coming soon. Could not open the site as it is blocked. tsk.

I do not think Viber is there yet. Even when I am on 3G the call quality is not that great and I hate it when it sounds like you are talking in a tin can...

Remember the Android version is in Beta... It works but depending on who I call that call quality sucks or is great. I think the slower phones will battle, I phoned a mate on his Iphone and it was good but my fiance on her Optimus one sounded like she was in a tin can.

What does the call quality indicator say? It could be the 3g signal you have.

It is...I got mine from the market. Do a search viber free call and it will show up. Look for the purple logo thingy majiggy.
