A few months ago I had to buy a new router as the old one was hit by lightening so I'm not actually keen to have to buy another new router to get the 8ta 10GB promo to work. However I do need to share the 3G connection with one PC connected via Ethernet port, one smartphone (WiFi) and one laptop (WiFi).

Can I just get the USB 7.2mbps 3G dongle and share the connection wirelessly and via Ethernet using my current router? If not what's the cheapest reliable option?

(Base PC is WinXP SP3 home, router is Belkin F6D4630-4 v2)

Yes its possible, I'm currently sharing my 3g connection( 8ta + win7) over an old telkom marconi wifi router.

Once you turn on connection sharing in windows it will change your IP address to 192.168.137.1(might be different in XP) Check by running cmd from the run command and then typing ipconfig /all you will find the new ip address under your lan ethernet connection.
You must then change the ip of the router to the same range, I changed it to 192.168.137.2
The most importing thing is to disable DHCP server on the router and let the PC handle the allocation of IP addresses.

Thanks, thought there was more to it or that it wasn't possible (have had weird sharing problems before).

I struggled to set mine up but after turning off the DHCP server setting on the router it now works 100%. I don't know if its necessary but my laptop doesn't have a static ip and under internet properties, connections, Lan settings, none of the boxes are ticked.

Hope it works for you

Thanks, hope so.

Another question: I have a old HTC Dream Android phone that's not being used, could that be used tethered instead of a 3G dongle? It's claimed to be HSDPA, 7.2 Mbps; HSUPA 2 Mbps.

No reason it shouldn't work

I've got my 8ta sim and can connect: internet > phone > pc just fine, but I am battling to get the other pc/laptop on the network connected and working (wired or wireless).

What I did is to disable DHCP on the router, however then I can't get back into the router through it's default 192.168.2.1 so I can't change it's ip address, "ipconfig /all" says my belkin adapter ip is now 169.254.100.166, Subnet mask 255.255.0.0 (set to obtain IP auto.).

My 8ta adapter ip is 192.168.42.38 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 default gateway 192.168.42.129 (set to obtain IP auto. and ICS enabled)

My knowledge of networks is rudimentary at best, but I've tried giving the belkin adapter a static ip of 192.168.42.39, SNM 255.255.255.0 with no luck.

Could someone point me in the right direction here?

When you turn on ICS in Win xp it changes your LAN ip address to 192.168.0.1, try changing the Static ip address of the router to 192.168.0.2 and everything else should should be set on obtain ip address automatically.

Thanks Jakes147, tried that (and tried DHCP on and off router) but no luck, ipconfig /all on the PC that's not connecting gives 169.254.184.141 / 255.255.0.0. Changing it manually to 192.168.0.9 / 255.255.255.0 makes no difference...

...with DHCP "on" on the router I can see and access the wired laptop in my network places but that laptop has no internet access. With DHCP "off" there's nothing.

would you mind uploading a screen shot of the ipconfig /all results

Ok, everything seems fine on the pc. Reset the router so that you can access the setup page again. then change the ip address of the router to 192.168.0.2 and disable DHCP. After you change the default ip address you won't be able to access the setup page through the 192.168.2.1 but through the new 192.168.0.2

Yep done that but still no joy, I can't understand why it's not working

Thanks for your time on this, Jakes147.

Ip on laptop = 169.254.102.3 / 255.255.0.0

Something is not right because if your laptop is automatically getting its ip from the host computer it should be somewhere in the 192.169.0.3-192.169.0.254 range. 192.168.0.1 should be the host computer (automatically assigned when turning on ICS) and 192.168.0.2 the router (Assigned by you)

go through the following http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126
or try running the Network Setup Wizard

This stuff drives me nuts. I managed to get the other PC working last night by doing this:
enable ics on 8ta adapter
router's adapter ip changes to 192.168.0.1 (as expected)
enable dhcp on router
change router ip to 192.168.0.1, lose contact with router (weird!)
other computer - manually set ip to 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0, add a gateway ip address 192.168.0.1
ta da

Not perfect but it was working, problem the gateway causes about 5kbps/5kbps up/down data to flow permanently between the internet and that connected computer which chews away slowly at my bandwidth allocation.

Losing complete contact with the router is disconcerting too as if I want to change something there I have to do a full reset of it.

try the above changes

You can't have the same ip address for different devices on the network

Thanks! it's working again, must have done something similar last night, but couldn't recall the steps exactly.

However got connection only with an internet gateway enabled and showing in my network connections which permanently causes a data flow of approx 7.5kbps down and 10.1kbps up, weird - works out +/- 7MB an hour.

Will now have to try figure this one out...
