Default Telkom WiMax - Packet Loss

    Hi Guys,

So I've got a strange problem.

This has been going on for about two weeks now. During the day, I get massive packet loss, about 15%. During the evenings, say, after 1900, all is perfect - no packet loss.

I've called the Wimax dept. at Telkom, they'e logged a ticket, but they said if they come out, and there is nothing wrong, they are going to charge me.

So now, I've plugged my notebook straight into the Alvarion device, and I dialled a telkom account, perfect almost no packet loss (as far as I can tell), when the connection goes through my rouer, then it starts, I've adjusted my MTU to it's optimum value, which for my connection is 1462. Yet the packet loss is continuing.

When I run the router to my 3G router via WAN, it's perfect, no problems.

Just in case, I've reflashed the firmware on my Linksys WRT54 just in case. ( I'm using tomato firmware 1.28)

I have also tried a wholly different firmware and router configuration (vlan), and it's still happening.

I'm at my wits end with Telkom Wimax.

At first my suspicions were on the router, but doing a thorough diagnostic, there is nothing wrong with it. I thought it might be the DSL account, but I tried Openweb Uncapped, and Afrihost.

I'm almost certain it's the Telkom WiMax tower, as the technician said my signal to the tower is an incredible -24 dBi (which I find strange, because that's incredibly strong, yet I'm over 12 KM's away from the station, and it's not 100% LOS as far as I can see. (On a side note, either WiMax is very resilient against interference, or their systems is reporting the signals wrong)

They have also reset the alvarion device, TWICE.

    Anybody else having similar issues?

Have you checked your lan cables? This is a strangle problem in deed, so check the stoopid things first.

    Hi,

I got Telkom Wimax as well, I've had similar issues.

What I can tell you is:

*Connecting from your PC = Best way to connect, I'm not sure if there are any incompatibility issues, I tried with a Linksys router and I can feel my internet is less responsive, even online gaming the latencies are unstable with the router, note I had no other router to test with.

*Troubleshoot your Alvarion CPE, change your PC addy to 192.168.254.X and connect to your Alvarion CPE using http://192.168.254.251 - Check your Performance and DB, check if it fluctuates a lot between diff DBs, also try and fine tune your CPE, experiment with different angles and positions, whatever you DO DONT CHANGE ANYTHING on CPE! :P - Remember getting your DB lower means a more stable connection, also OPT for a Stable DB than a Fluctuated DB, if it JUMPS it drops for that split second.

Oh yeah, login details for the CPE is installer/installer .

*Upgrade your Router's Firmware to latest.

*Adjust YOUR CPE like in POINT 2, I cannot tell you how much diff this made for me, LOWER DB the better.

    Good Luck!

    Regards,

I cancelled my Telkom WiMax, I senior technician dealing with escalated Wimax queries, has informed me [whisper quietly] that Telkom is no longer doing any deployments, they are ordering replacement parts for the towers and the lowest priority, and the towers and routing is not being maintained as well as it should. He advised me to jump the proverbial Wimax ship. It's a dead technology in South Africa.
