Using a CDMA cellphone from the states on Neotels network

Sorry to reopen an ancient thread. Now that you can get an RUIM card from Neotel, would it be possible to use it with a cellphone from somewhere like China or the US (assuming the carrier bands are compatible)?

I suspect you'd run into problems with ICASA because the devices are not licensed for SA. By extension Neotel would not be able to offer support even if you happen to have the devices.

you might be able to but remember it is at own risk and the device might be impounded.

Also I've heard that there is a version of SGS3 - yes three - that is dual CDMA & GSM (for China & Indian markets perhaps)- now wouldn't that be sweet is Neotel approve this phone in a couple of months?

Hey everyone. I desperately need a decent dual sim phone that supports Neotel. They gave out the hTc Desire VC on contract and I must say that it is the worst possible phone ever!!!
Incredibly slow and totally useless!!! I hate it!!! I have written to Neotel asking if they can suggest an alternative, but they appear tongue-tied.
Can anyone direct me to a phone that I can get locally. There is the Axesstel one that Neotel is now giving, but it seems to be a clone of the htc desire VC. Besides, the specs look sad.

Selago,

In theory you should be able to use any CDMA phone on Neotel's network, - just like you can use any GSM based phone on our MNO's here in SA. There are obviously a couple of previsions:

1) The phone must be ICASA approved.
2) The phone must be able to insert a RUIM -(SIM in GSM speak)
3) You must get a RIUM from any Walk-in Centre - Get one with a 088-prefix. I got a prepaid one the other day, but for data only, but I'm sure you get one for voice as well.

Just out of interest, I used a Neotel 593 LTE router, and popped in a VC LTE SIM in it and that works as well - but that's all GSM 4G based.

Shweet, i'm coming back to SA with my HTC one m7, which I got from China but is cracked and supports GSM and CMDA and LTE.

Seems Neotel offers pretty good packages, I'll test it when I get back.
