BitTorrent protocol could ease network congestion

Each client then opens a bunch of connections to various hosts. Some routers have trouble with that. It might require a whole industry paradigm shift.

I know a few years ago there was problems but I doubt any routers in use today will have a problem with Bittorrent

It's taking the industry over 10 years (and counting) to move from IPv4 to IPv6. What makes him think that this new protocol has a chance of even getting a foothold?

It depends how many users share the router. 200-800 connections out per user is nothing with torrents. Some routers will hit their ceiling at around 2000 connections. Some can be configured. Remember, it's not just one user hammering the machine.
