Thread: Official LG P970 Optimus Black thread

    Hi Guys

So I'm sorry to say but Gingerbread totally ruined my phone (LG P970 Optimus Black - not rooted). I like all of you having been waiting patiently for Gingerbread for months. My tab (Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000) runs 50% faster after the Gingerbread update a few months back, so I was expecting good things for my phone. Unfortunately, the memory usage on Gingerbread is way to high. On Froyo, I use to have between 150 to 200MB of free memory after killing the unwanted apps. Now on Gingerbread, it's down to 100MB or less. I'm am regretting upgrading to gingerbread. How can I go back to Froyo? It was running brilliantly.

I've been using Easy Task Killer on Froyo and it worked brilliantly. Gingerbread. I've tried Advanced Task Killer and others, but it's not helping, there's just too little memory left. Tried with Auto-optimize/Autokill ON & OFF, no difference. Phone is sluggish is there's a few apps running (facebook, k9 mail). There's so little memory, Opera Mobile with 2 tabs gets stuck, whereas before I could view up to 7 tabs before finding a slowdown. What ticks me off is all these apps which want to run like Noom, Tweetcaster, etc. even if you set the notifications to off. Even more than that is the utterly useless stock Email app which runs all the time using about 20MB even though there are no accounts setup. Honestly, it's so useless, LG should be ashamed to load it on this beautiful phone. The most important reason I can't use it because messages don't get deleted messages off the server when deleting them off the phone. WTF? K-9 Mail is pretty good. I was hoping LG would upgrade the stock email app but it's still the same k@k.

I'm so ticked off. How can I go back to Froyo? I don't really want to root, but if I have to then I will because this phone is now barely usable the way I need to use it (k-9 Mail, Opera Mobile with at least 4 tabs, Facebook App - not all at the same time - although I could with Froyo).

PS: My advice to anyone with an unrooted phone - PLEASE DO NOT UPGRADE TO GINGERBREAD

Oddly, I responded to an SMS, locked my phone and put in back in my pocket. About 5 minutes later I heard the LG startup sound, checked the phone and it had crashed/rebooted itself. Now it's running super fast! Free Ram has gone from 40mb free with only 5 running apps to 143mb with the same apps running. Navigating the phone is smooth now as well. Very odd, but I'm happier now. Will have to wait and see if it gets bogged down again.
I tried that. Not helping. Moved apps to memory card, that didn't help either. Tried Auto-kill for junk apps leaving expected stuff like alarm clock, what's app, etc on the ignore list. No helping.

Me too. If I use a task killer, the free memory goes up to 100MB, but then all these damn apps start again, so on average with nothing running, I've got 30MB

How do you go back to Froyo?

I am trying the new Zeus v6, so far much faster & 0 freezes. Very happy! Only been on it for a couple of hours so will give feedback again.

This one is based on V20O from Spain, I think it is what made the difference. Could it be that the official SA one is the same as V20N or V20B?

The the previous 2 I tried was based on V20N from Germany, and it had the same problems you guys are getting on the official SA one...

I think the problem might be related to a memory leak or something like that.

    Edit: 6 hours up, RAM= 149MB used ; 198MB free.

My mom is getting the RBM Optimus Black in a few days. Should I do the firmware upgrade to 2.3?

    Seems it has issues...

I would leave it on 2.2 for a bit until we get another update.. Froyo ran nicely on it.

Just an update: Zeus v6 (V20O) still runs very nicely, no slow downs, no hanging. Some users reported battery drain but mine seems normal to me.

The instructions given seems fairly cryptic
    INSTRUCTIONS

    - Need to use CWM recovery
    - Copy v6 to sdcard root
    - Reboot in recovery
    - Do a nandroid backup of your phone, I'm not responsible of your data losing
    - Do a wipe data/factory reset.
    - Flash the ROM v6 with option: Install zip from SDCARD.
    - Reboot and wait...
Is there any place with more detailed instructions (for a first time Custom ROM user!)

I wouldn't say no to a good tutorial step by step truth be told, the knowledge i've gleemed thusfar is dangerous

First up would be reflashing the phone to a rootable Froyo/Gingerbread,rooting and installing CWM recovery, rebooting into recovery, wiping the phone, then flashing with the replacement ROM

Just an overview of what I did:

-You need to root you phone first. You would need to look at a root exploit that works for you current version, search the XDA forums. (I was on Froyo V10 or something and Gingerbreak gave me root)

-Copy the ROM zip file that you downloaded from XDA to your SD i.e. http://www.mediafire.com/?uu3m094txdogub2

-Go to the Apps store and download ROM manager https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...tta.rommanager

-Backup your data. (I think it would be better to re download apps later. I hear resorting app data via Titanium back could cause instability and battery drain...)

-Boot into recovery mode via the downloaded app.

-Use the backup option and backup the current firmware (I would do a factory reset before hand so it does not backup all the apps as well) (this will allow you to go back to the current version should you not like the new ROM.

-Wipe and Reset the phone in the app

-Install zip file from SD card

    Done.

/remember that the above could void your warranty and you could break your phone.
