Default Looking for a cheap/discounted portable gaming platform for a friend in hospital

Fellow MyBB's, I have a very sick friend in hospital suffering from a very rare form of cancer - Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma. His name is Gideon and he's only 20 years old. He's gone through multiple round of chemo and his doctors were initially positive about the results of the treatments.

Unfortunately due to the very aggressive nature of the cancer it has returned and very rapidly spread to both his diaphragm and his back. At the moment he has no use of his lower extremities and as a result he's been confined to his bed in Steve Biko hospital.

Due to him spending most of this year in hospital, he's gotten through a lot of reading but he's at the point where he's grown tired of this. He loves computers and gaming and was studying programming before the cancer hit. Most of his basic needs are taken care of by his family and his church community (where I'm a member) which means he doesn't need to eat nasty hospital food, he's got a lot of friends visiting etc...

But I'd love to help him fight the boredom and keep his spirits up too. As long as his mind's not idle it's easier for himto stay positive. This is where I need to ask your help. I'm not asking for handouts. I'm asking that if you have a PSP or something similar lying around at home that you're no longer using would you consider selling it to me at a discount? Alternatively, if you're a shop owner who could sell me a demo model or a system at cost - I'd be eternally grateful. If you could throw in a few games it would be awesome too. I don't have a lot of spare cash lying around so I'm trying to get Gideon as much as possible with my limited funds.

If you're in a position to help me out, could you reply in this thread or send me a PM and I'll get in touch with you.

If anyone has any concerns about this being a scam I understand that completely and I'd like to address that in this post too:
    - You are welcome to check out my posting history and my registration date. I've been on these forums from the early days and I've never attempted to scam anyone.
    - A respected poster on these board - Peder - can also vouch for me. He's also a friend of Gideon's.
    - I'm completely willing to disclose personal details about myself in PM's if anything needs to be verified.
    - Finally, if someone here can help me out I promise to report back (with photos) in this thread on the results of your good deed.

I unfortunately dont have anything to offer, besides for my moral support. Sorry to hear about your friend.

If he loves reading, has he thought of writing something himself. There is nothing like having a goal to keep your spirits up.

anyway hope you come right with your portable.

Thanks for the kind words ave! Appreciate it and it's a great suggestion - I'll pass it along when I visit him.

Sure amongst the bunch of us we can build him a nice rig with put together spares. Is there space in his room for a PC gaming rig?
A Pitbull is a small dog with a big heart. But if provoked will pounce without warning and cause large amounts of hideous damage.

Another awesome suggestion but unfortunately he's in a state hospital and doesn't have his own private room. That's why I thought of something like a PSP or similar - it's also something he can hide under his pillow when not in use. Even if we could get a desktop in there, I suspect it would eventually find legs and disappear while he's sleeping. A laptop could work but it's a much pricier option.

No worries, the fact that some of you are interested in this and coming up with ideas/suggestions really means a lot. Thank you!

Sorry to hear, all I can give is advice and condolences.

I think the cheapest route would probably be if someone could sponsor a iPod touch, older iPhone or something like the Xperia Play. The mobile games are normally a lot cheaper when compared to PSP titles plus you have a lot more functionality with regard to E-books, music and video playback.

Maybe someone on the list have an old iPhone 3gs they dont need anymore?
.... and thanks for all the fish.

Please don't! I'm very confident I'll find someone who can help me out. Luckily MyBB is a huge community!

True, I gave Gideon my old 'smartphone' - a Nokia 5800 - but it's not that great for gaming. I would be willing to consider buying a cheap iPod, iPhone or even tablet for him.
