Recommend digital camera for R4000

Canon Powershot S2 iS - 5.0mp , 48 x zoom ( 12 x 4 ) , optical image stabilizer + ultrasonic motor + FlexiZone AF/AE + extra-long movie mode , 1.8" Lcd , DIGIC ii with iSAPS , video max resolution - 640x480@30fps , support optional lens ; with 16mb SD , 4 x AA battery {Price has been pm'ed}

That would be your best option.

I would agree with Person... Great looking camera. I have the S1 which at the time cost me what you would now pay for the S2.

Agreed, you can't go wrong with the IS 2. :) Have a look at www.dpreview.com, unfortunately not SA-prices but should give you a good idea of what is going on.

You'll see the IS2 is on the top-ten-favourite list.

I have been using the "s2 is" since June 2005.
As a general purpose digital camera I think it is one of the best.
However it is not a camera that you can slip into a pocket

True, but there isn't a lot of them that has a 12x optical zoom! Try standing on the pier in New York and taking a photo of the Statue of Liberty with a 4x optical zoom... :D

How much are these cameras here in SA? I might also want one...

Battery Advice

What is the best Battery Option to buy when choosing a camera.
I notice the Camera spoken about used 4xAA batteries.
Wouldn't a solid battery type be better?

I prefer AA batteries. In an emergency it is always possible to find replacements quite easily. I use rechargeble Nmh and am very happy with battery life but carry a spare set of 4 in any event.

May I recommend the Fuji 5600/5200 ?

http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Fujifilm-FinePix-S5200-Digital-Camera-Review-.htm

Its 5MP and retails at around R3500, it is really a great camera ...
10x Optical ( 4x Digital ? Switch it off anyway regardless of which brand )
15 sec - 1/2000 sec Shutter speed
Shipped with 16MB XD ( regardless which Camera you get you I recommend a bare minimum of 128MB card +/- 100 pics )
Movie Mode 640x480 320x240

It uses 4 AA batteries and you easily get between 300 and 400 shots per set ( and more sometimes ), which is excellent, and since I am using rechargeables, its great.
Colours are vibrant, it is one of the few cameras , and ONLY camera in this price range that has a 1600 ISO.

Possible Downsides :
Slow MANUAL focus, auto focus is very fast
Its method to avoid shakes is different, since it escelates the shutter speed and ISO to compensate for shake, not really a huge down, but to some people they would say it is, I am happy enough.
In terms of price and "bang for buck" I would recommend this Fuji over the Canon, as always its your personal choice, but I can say that I am more than happy with this camera, and while it may not be perfect, for the sub R4000 budget its a excellent choice.

Oh and www.digitalcamerainfo.co.uk rated the Fuji s5600/s5200 19 out of 91 and the Canon S2 at 27 out of 91 :)

Super-zoom camera with great lens : Canon S2 IS

I can personally vouch for this one - own it, and love it. You can now pick these up at Incredible Connection for R3999, and if you look around you might find them at around R3700 (or maybe even R3500 if you're VERY lucky). But you need 4xNIMH AA batteries + charger.

"Semi-pocketable" : Canon A620 / A700

The A620 is brilliant, but the A700's just been announced and looks to be worth waiting for. Small size camera with 6x zoom (only 4x on the A620) and enough megapixels to make anyone happy. Plus full manual control. Also cheaper than the S2.

Agree completely.

There is a Canon S3 announced in case having the latest and greatest is your thing.

Looks kinda cool in black.

Dunno about everyone else but I buy a digital camera to last me about 5 years, and Canon seems to be releasing a whole lot of stuff all the time, in other words I would never be up to date, if I tried ...
Nothing spectacular with the new S3 from the look of things, new package, same insides, give or take a few cosmetics ... Oh and I would reckon on about R4500 - R5000 for the Canon S3 when it arrives.
