The Pervy Sage
I brought in the new year by attending the Fact Durban Rock festival at the Moses Mabhida stadium. In simple words it was awesome. There was one earlier that year, but this one was increased for larger crowds. All you get now when you go to clubs is mostly electronic music...but this was a straight up no holds bar house music event.
The event was a 6pm to 6am festival. Though it was stated you could bring camp chairs the area in which camps chairs were allowed was a bit far from stage so we ended up returning them to the car.
Most of the performers until 10pm were the starters after that it was madness...Professor brought the house down.
After that some DJ's follewed up, but then came DJ Tira who brought in the new year, Big Nuz also joined him on stage.
After Tira, came the legendary Oskido. If you ask anyone this was the highlight of the night. If you grew up listening to house in the late 90's early 00's you would understand why everyone was raving about his set. He started out his with his new song "Wa Muhle" (your beautiful) with Nokwazi, I never heard the song before but its not the same as the one I just saw on youtube, this mix just contained mostly heavy drums which were shaking me up. After this he went into "Tribal Blast" which then sent the whole crowd insane, circles of people dancing were being formed. I really understand now why Oskido is held in such high regard, especially with all the artists he has brought up under his wing.
If this event ever comes again, especially if it's another new years eve party I'm telling you to go!!! I truly wish some thing of this caliber would happen in Joburg. Yeah there is always the big show at H20 (which is normally held cause of some international act) but this does not compare. It was locally made show with top local artists and top DJs...no one was put as the main act. This is what the SA music industry needs.
It's also reinstated my love for house music which I stopped listening to around 2006
Sound -> 9/10. Once you walked into the area where camp chairs were not allowed the bass would be thumping, which was a really large area. I was at the front most of the show and all I have to say is wow. You could hear the music clearly even in the parking lots across the street. The only time you would not hear the music in the arena was when you were by the second dance floor area.
Stage Visualisation-> 3/10. This was very poorly by the organisers. The stage had only one screen, in the middle. Most shows need two screens but the area was not wide but more of length this can be overlooked. What was terrible was what was displayed, there were moments when the screen would show windows media player and one of the cameras which was aiming at the DJ would constantly go out of focus so some guy had to keep coming back on stage during performances and fix it.
Location -> 9/10. Could have been a better place in Durban, especially since there was a casino a few blocks down which had 5-7 minute big fireworks display which could be easily seen from the stadium grounds.
If you want I can post some pics I took during the show.
