Cost of Pre-Paid Electricity
We converted to pre-paid electricity recently, and everytime we go purchase they seem to charge a slightly different rate. How do they determine what the rate is per kw/h. I have bills ranging from 79c-98c/kwh. Anyone figure out how the costing works?
I don't have the facts with me but it is quite easy go to http:\\www.capetown.gov.za and look for the table and explanation.

Tshwane is also charging according to a sliding scale. The more you buy in the same month, the more you pay per unit.
Didn't know they charge differently per area. Johannesburg's website is pretty crap, from what I have found online its approx 93c/kwh but discounts do apply. Thanks.
Besides different prices for different municipalities, there are different pricing plans you can be on. I cant remember exactly how it works, but if you use alot of electricity you can choose to be on a lower per unit price, but then you forfeit your free units per month.Originally Posted by phiber

Paying R1.42 per kWh here in Pta - from the very start of the month. Tshwane has the most expensive prepaid electricity or my meter vendor is making a bundle.
I'm charged between R1.35 and R1.48 per kWh for prepaid. I get the first kWh free the first time I buy pre-paid in any calendar month
fairland in joburg - 1st 500 units costs 70.51c per kWh. (i'm not sure if i'm expressing that correctly but hopefully you understand what i'm gettin at). goes up from there and up and up and up.
The prices you quoted is not for Tshwane municipality. Maybe you are buying from a private meter company? Do you have a Tshwane municipality prepaid card with a number on the front?
Can someone please explain how would you do this calculation
eg. Unit / Amount = rate or would it be Amount / Unit = Rate?
So say I Buy R500 Electricity and get 436 Units as an example how would I know what the correct rate is?
Rand/unit gives you the cost unit. So R500/436 =R 1,15 per unit.
I've been on prepaid for some years now. This year they introduced "block" tariffs. In the past you pay a fixed rate per kWh and the calculations were simple. With the new block tariffs, it is different. For example: At our municipality we pay 80c per kWh for 1-50units, 90c per kWh for 51-200, 110c per kWh for 201-400 and 165c per kWh for 400 and up. I need to provide a meter number if I want to buy electricity. (Don't know if it is the same elsewhere) The system then always knows how much I have used and bills me accordingly. One can easily work the amounts out in excel.

Hey guys...I know this thread is almost a year old but I still don't understand why we get less units/kwh for more money. e.g. When I buy R20's worth I get between 19.7 and 22.3 kwh but when I buy R50 I get 33.7 kwh. If one does the math it's clearly daylight robbery.
So I figure buy R20 everytime instead of R50 or more (Coz R100 gives you 65.2 kwh) but on the other hand there's the issue of the electricity vendors being offline and one is unable to buy any. So what else can a person do??
Gas would be an option but I would be a divorced man overnight coz the wife is scared witless of those things...lol
